What are Decodable Readers and how do I read them with my child?

 

Decodable home readers are an important part of your child’s early reading journey. They are carefully designed to let children practise the letter-sound patterns they have been learning in class. These books only use sounds and words your child has been explicitly taught, they help build confidence, accuracy and fluency.

What Are Decodable Books?

  • They use phonics patterns your child has already learned
  • They include high‑frequency words your child is beginning to recognise
  • They allow children to sound out (decode) unfamiliar words rather than guess from pictures

How you can help at home

Re‑read for Fluency

Once your child has decoded the words, encourage a second or third read. This helps them:

  • Read more smoothly
  • Build confidence
  • Understand the story more deeply

 

Celebrate Effort, Not Perfection

Early reading is a skill that grows with practice. Praise:

  • Trying to sound out
  • Using strategies independently
  • Sticking with tricky words

A little encouragement goes a long way.

 

Keep Sessions Short and Positive

5–10 minutes is plenty. If your child is tired or frustrated, pause and try again later. Reading

Talk About the Book

After reading, chat about:

  • Favourite parts
  • New words
  • What happened in the story

This builds comprehension and vocabulary.

 

 

 

 

 


Calling Year 3 & 4 Families: Discover a Unique

Reading Research Opportunity

Reading engagement is important for continued growth in children’s reading ability and their academic success. Research suggests that children’s reading ability is further connected to their wellbeing (e.g., anxiety, peer relationships). However, we do not fully understand why this connection exists. 

 

Students in Years 3 and 4 are warmly invited to take part in an exciting research project led by Andrea Salins from the Australian Centre for the Advancement of Literacy. This study explores how children’s reading skills connect with their overall learning success. By participating, families will be helping our school deepen its understanding of how to best support students’ reading development and wellbeing. It’s a wonderful opportunity to contribute to research that can make a real difference for our learners.

 

Forms and additional information have been sent to Year 3 and 4 families.
