On Friday the 28th of March, an enthusiastic group of Year 7 and Year 8 students visited Swinburne University’s KIOSC for a First LEGO League (FLL) workshop. The FLL competition involves students designing a robot (built from LEGO) to complete a series of themed challenges. In addition, each team of students undertake a research project that aims to solve a real-world problem related to the theme. The competition places a strong emphasis on teamwork and sportsmanship.
Friday’s workshop was led by LEGO Master’s Ryan Evans, who also teaches STEM at Rangeview Primary. Because many of our students have experience with FLL from primary school, Ryan set a number of more challenging tasks for the students to complete. Tasks included team LEGO design (with time constraints) and an opportunity for students to complete some tasks from last year’s FLL. They were given the constraint that they had to find a different way to complete the tasks than what they actually used in last year’s competition.
Our students had a great time and started to build some human connections (rather than just LEGO ones) with everyone keen to join a team in this year’s FLL competition, which starts in August. Students will have the opportunity to hone their skills next term when the Robotics Club formally launches.
