On Friday the 28th of March, 21 of Vermont’s finest swimmers took to the pool at Aquanation. There were many successes throughout the day in the form of medals, PBs, first time participation and improved performances from years prior. Special mention to year 12 student Adam E who broke the 100m butterfly record.

Athletics Carnival

On Friday the 7th of March the annual Athletics Carnival was held at Bill Sewart Athletics Track. Participation was at a premium as many students put their best foot forward to have a go and obtain as many house points as possible throughout the day. There were some fantastic performances from many individuals, and as always, the marching band was a highlight as they strutted their way down the 100m straight.

House Cross Country

Approximately 100 students elected to participate in the House Cross Country event at the Bellbird Dell on Wednesday the 19th of March. It was fantastic to see so many students enjoying a run in the sun and pushing themselves along the trail. Students are reminded that Division Cross Country will be held on Tuesday the 13th of May at Norton’s Park in Wantirna. Any student who did not compete at the house event and wishes to participate should contact Ms Malander via email as soon as possible.

Year 8 Round Robin

Girls Volleyball

The Year 8 girls A and B volleyball teams put on spectacular performances showcasing skill, determination, and teamwork throughout the day. From the first whistle to the final set, the girls displayed resilience and sportsmanship, proving themselves as a formidable force on the court.

Throughout the competition the teams dominated their pool matches with strong serves, determined digs and strong sets. Their ability to communicate and work together set them apart from the competition, earning them both well-deserved spots in the grand finals.

The grand final matches were intense battles, with both teams leaving everything on the court. Despite their best efforts and a hard-fought contest, our Year 8 girls narrowly missed out on the title, finishing as runners-up. While the results weren’t what they had hoped for, their performance was nothing short of outstanding.

A huge congratulations to all players and their coaches for their dedication and hard work.

Tennis

The Year 8 Girls and Boys Tennis teams hit the courts at Pinewood Tennis Club on Tuesday, ready for a day of friendly competition. Our players gave it their all against some tough opponents. Despite their best efforts, our teams were unable to take the win, with Mount Waverley emerging victorious on the day.

Our Boys B Team found more success, showcasing their skills and teamwork in some exciting doubles matches and winning one of the rounds. The sunny weather made for a perfect day of tennis, with plenty of rallies, close games, tiebreakers and, most importantly, lots of fun.

A special thank you goes to Jayden’s mother for coming along to cheer on the team and for generously providing snacks and drinks to keep our players energised! Well done to all the students who participated—you represented our school with pride, and we look forward to seeing you back on the court next year!

Alexis Mitchell

Baseball

Our year 8 baseballers put on an impressive performance from start to finish. Most pleasing to see though, was the camaraderie and teamwork that was on display throughout the day. We saw a combination of powerful hitting, patience in the batter’s box and bold baserunning in our first two games against Highvale and Mount Waverley, resulting in 10-1 and 10-2 wins respectively. Only giving up a total of 3 runs in our first two games was also very impressive.

We had a collection of fantastic pitching and catching on show, along with great teamwork in the field to make both groundball and flyball outs. Our final game against Glen Waverley didn’t go quite to plan in the first inning, with the team unable to score. However, the incredible pitching performance that we saw from Tony all day reached a new level, and along with some great 1st base work from Albert, Glen Waverley didn’t get a runner on base at all in the first two innings.

Our second inning was more successful, with Vermont bringing in 3 runs. Then in the third inning the floodgates opened, and we piled on 5 runs to extend the lead to 8-0. At that point, the game was called as we were too far up for Glen Waverley to catch up.

Congratulations to the whole team, genuinely everyone contributed to a very successful day, and now we move on to EMR.

Year 7 Round Robin

Cricket Boys/Mixed

The Year 7’s participated in Cricket at Mulgrave Reserve.

Our first opponent was Mt Waverley. We batted first and made 144 with Zac and Yuvi both making 50’s. We then restricted Mt Waverly heavily and where able to progress thru the final against Glen Waverley. They lost the toss and were sent into bowl. Out team displayed accurate bowling and restricted Glen Waverley to 103 after 15 overs meaning they would need 103 off 90 balls. They started okay before Zac lost his wicket, but Miles was able to recover as Yuvi and Miles both put on a big partnership hitting multiple fours as Vermont were victorious with an over to spare. Well done to everyone on the day.

Softball

Despite forming a team one week before the big event, our Year 8 girls softball team made a valiant effort. Every student in the team demonstrated true greatness in at least one area of the team composition and did their utmost to support their peers. A special shoutout goes to Gabrielle H and Emaan N who, in the final game of three, found true balance as catcher and pitcher respectively – they almost seemed to communicate with their minds! Our Year 9 coaches, Zoya and Myla, did exceptionally well in rallying the team and running skill drills too – a big thanks from me for volunteering!

Even though the team really tried their utmost to master the game while playing for the first time, unfortunately loss came after loss – but plenty of fun was had along the way.
