Harmony Week

At Oakleigh Primary School we are fortunate to have many cultures represented to create a rich diverse community. During term 1 the groups have been celebrating this especially during Harmony week. Harmony week promotes the importance of inclusiveness, diversity and respect for people from all different backgrounds. In the classroom the children were learning about how we can create a classroom environment where everyone feels welcomed regardless of their cultural background. In the four year old groups the children worked on their flag project over several weeks where they created their cultural background country flag using tissue paper. Families were also invited to send in a family photo and tell us a little about their culture. The teachers read books about different cultures and sang songs about how we are all different which is great and learnt to say hello in different languages. In the 3 year old program the children created a rainbow by practicing their tearing skills and with the families help created a wall displaying information about the cultural backgrounds of the children and their families.
Finally we invited all our families to join us for morning tea with their groups. It was wonderful to see so many families join in the morning teas and they were great celebration of diversity we have in the Kindergarten with so many delicious treats from all around the world!
