On Tuesday, March 4, the Social Justice team cooked and sold pancakes at the Interhouse Athletics carnival to raise money to support the mission work of the MSC Mission Office. A dedicated team of students worked tirelessly on the day. Pancakes were $1 each and we raised $205.00.
Shrove Tuesday
In Australia and Britain, the day preceding Ash Wednesday is popularly known as Shrove Tuesday. It is also frequently called Pancake Tuesday or Fat Tuesday as well as by its Latin name, Mardi Gras, which when translated from the French also means “Fat Tuesday.”
But it is the name “Shrove” that shows its religious origins. Shrove is the past tense of the English verb “Shrive” which means to obtain absolution for one’s sins by way of confession and by doing penance.
With Shrove Tuesday taking place before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday, it was the day when Christians were encouraged to go to confession in preparation for the penitential season that would end 40 days and 40 nights later with Easter Sunday.

Ash Wednesday – 5 March
The school community gathered on Ash Wednesday, in union with Christians around the world, to mark the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday.
Lent is a time that invites us to consider what new habits of mind or daily practices might make our lives better. Traditionally, there are two paths in Lent: the path of renunciation (giving up something) and the path of assumption (taking on something).
A simple liturgy led by our students began the day, with everyone receiving the symbolic ashes on their foreheads as a reminder of our human frailty and the love and mercy of God.
St. Patrick’s Day – 17 March
Students and staff were encouraged to wear green last Monday to celebrate St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Students wearing casual clothes contributed $2 to support Caritas Australia’s 2025 Project Compassion ‘Unite against poverty this Lent’. Mr Terry Molan donated spot prizes for the best-dressed effort in green.
Overall winners -Year 12 students, Lexie Smith and Tara McIntyre.
Caritas Australia - Project Compassion
‘Unite against poverty this Lent’
During Lent, we will raise funds for Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion appeal, which supports works in Samoa, Vietnam, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. There will be boxes in each Pod, at the Canteen, and in various places throughout the school. We encourage everyone to donate any loose change as they can.
