Year 10 Port Fairy Coastline Changes Excursion

Finuala Neeson

Last week, Year 10 students ventured to Port Fairy to investigate how the coastline changes and what’s being done to protect it. Armed with the QuickCapture app, we snapped photos of coastal erosion and the different management strategies in place to combat it.

It was eye-opening to see how powerful the ocean can be—sand dunes eroded and even some areas where the coastline was at risk. But it wasn’t all bad news! We also saw how rock armour, dune revegetation, and seawalls are helping to slow erosion and protect the shoreline.

The excursion gave us a real-world look at the impact of natural processes and human intervention on coastal environments. Plus, a day at the beach—even for schoolwork—is always a win!
