Spotlight on Learning

Prep
History in Prep - Where am I from?
This term in Prep we have been learning about our classmates, our families and our family history and culture. We have shared about our family cultural backgrounds and have learnt that our families come from all over the world. We have been lucky to have some very generous parents and grandparents share their culture with us. We have learnt about Macedonia, India, Italy, Sri Lanka, Poland, Ireland, The Philippines, France, China and Greece!
“My Mema moved to Australia with her sister. She showed us special traditional Macedonian Folk Dance costumes” - Keira
“My family are from Bangalore in India. We celebrate Diwali.’ - Arjun
“My Nonna came to Australia on a boat with her brothers and Mum. It took a looong time. She brought very special dolls and tomato seeds with her.” - Paris
“My family comes from Sri Lanka. My mum cooks delicious milk rice and kokis.” - Aanjali

Auslan
Auslan Video Transcript: "Hello! We are your Language Leaders, Adele & Katherine."
(Note: Adele's dominant hand is her left, and Katherine is right-handed, which is why their signs move in opposite directions.)
Introducing our Language Leaders for 2025:
Katherine and Adele
Why do you enjoy Auslan?
Katherine – I like that I have the chance to experience how Deaf students might feel and that I can learn different signs useful in our every day life. I also like that this subject isn’t offered in many other schools and that we can communicate without speaking.
Adele – I enjoy learning signs from different themes and playing a variety of games and fun activities. I like the chance to learn new things because it keeps me motivated to learn.
What is your favourite sign?
Katherine – One of my favourites is the sign for ‘Australia’ because it is our home sign and also because of the story behind it.
Adele – I am amused by the sign for ‘potato’, so that’s a favourite!
What is a myth about signing you wish you could eliminate?
Katherine – That Auslan is not a real language.
Adele - That spoken languages are more important than signed ones. It’s not true!
Why do you think everyone should learn Auslan?
Katherine – To inspire others.
Adele – So that everyone can communicate with the Deaf Community.
Adele and Katherine will be leading the signing of the National Anthem in our assemblies this year. If your child would like to practise Advance Australia Fair at home, a link to the version we have chosen is on the Student Landing Page.
