Some take aways from the presentation:
1. Be a Role Model
Kids learn by watching you. Use your device mindfully and show healthy screen habits.
- Set app timers and screen time goals.
- Turn off unnecessary notifications.
- Keep social media apps off your home screen.
- Put your device down when your child enters the room.
- Keep smartwatches on ‘Do Not Disturb’ when with your kids.
2. Educate Yourself
Stay informed about digital safety and your child’s online activities.
- Visit eSafety.gov.au for tips and guides.
- Know the apps your kids use and their features.
- Have open conversations about new apps and internet safety.
3. Talk About Screen Use
Include your kids in your digital habits and make screen time intentional.
- Narrate your tech use (e.g., “I’m checking the weather for our trip”).
- Encourage active screen use (creating vs. passive scrolling).
- Discuss your own struggles balancing screen time.
4. Make Time for Connection
Create intentional, device-free moments with your family.
- One hour a day without your phone = 15 extra days per year for family time.
- Schedule 5+ minutes of uninterrupted time with each child daily.
- Ask your kids how they’d like to spend quality time with you.
5. Create a Family Tech Agreement
Work together on a plan that makes sense for your family.
- Hold a relaxed family meeting about screen time.
- Revisit the agreement regularly.
- Use parental controls with open discussions, not just enforcement.
6. Transitioning from Screen Time
Help kids shift from screens to other activities smoothly.
- Set clear time limits and give multiple reminders.
- Offer a snack and a mood-boosting activity post-screen time.
- Have a list of non-screen activities visible for easy choices.
7. Set Device-Free Zones & Times
Encourage breaks from screens for better family bonding.
- Keep one area in the house device-free.
- Use a family phone box to store devices during meals.
- Eat together without screens and introduce a positive family ritual (e.g., sharing daily highlights).
