Music with 5/6
The 5/6 music classes have been learning to read music. This week they learnt about the difference between the bass clef and the treble clef. The piece they have begun on xylophones and glockenspiels, ‘Scooby Dooby Doo’, has a melodic line and a bass line and yesterday they played the two parts together - beautifully!
Performance
On Wednesday, 2nd August, students in Prep to Year 3 showcased their music learning from Semester 1 with a performance of ‘Songs, Sound effects and Silliness’. It was great to so many in the audience.

The performance began with ‘Boom Chicka Boom’, echoed, clapped and chanted as a warm up to tune in ears and also to demonstrate some of the elements of music that were the focus during Semester 1.
Tempo (fast & slow), Dynamics (loud & soft) and Timbre (which is the special sound that an instrument makes) were all showcased through the many different sound effects, songs and singing that were performed.
The Prep/1 class had a lot of fun putting their performance piece together. ‘Is your Grandmother a Goanna?’ was based on the book by well known children’s author Pamela Allen. The students made many different sound effects and acted out the story of a little boy (Orlonzo) making a long train trip to visit his Grandmother (Sofia). Along the way he met many station masters and came across all sorts of animals.
The 2/3 class performed a piece is also based on a book, by Susie Jenkins Pearce with beautiful pictures by Claire Fletcher called ‘The Seashell Song’. The students worked with the words of the book to create their own music to help create musical images of the ‘Song of the Sea’. The students worked in small groups with a big range of percussion instruments to experiment with sound and sound effects and put it all together to tell the story of the sea.
Students in 1/2 had been working on creating crazy rhymes, using puppets and exploring instruments, voices and objects to make sound effects. They performed a rendition of the well known song ‘Down by the Bay’ with some great singing and wonderful puppeteering.
The choir performed a very fitting piece for the performance called ‘Possum’ that finished with a possum falling off the ceiling fan onto the heads of the children. Sometimes we need to make space for a little bit of silliness in our lives.

Our choir treated us to a performance about a cheeky possum.
.......a possum fell from my bedroom ceiling, it woke me up and I started squeeling, HELP! HELP! I've been hit on the head, there's a hole in the roof and a possum in my bed........

Choir
Choir is open for all year levels to join and rehearsals are held each Wednesday during lunchtime. It's great to see so many students from all year levels getting involved.
