Day for Daniel

27th October

Keeping Kids Safe!

Next Friday 27th October is Day for Daniel that honours the memory of Daniel Morcombe. It is Australia’s largest child safety education and awareness day. Students will be participating in educational classroom activities regarding personal safety. The lessons are designed to supplement St John's ongoing, whole-school child safety education which is integrated into the curriculum.

Teachers will be discussing Personal Safety Networks with students and they will have the opportunity to think about and list their 5 safety helpers. The safety helpers must be adults and should include someone who lives at home as well as people who live outside the home. The students will bring home a cut our hand to share with the adults on the list.

Students will also discuss body clues that alert them to feeling unsafe, such as feeling yucky in the tummy, sweaty palms, crying, heart pounding and wobbly knees. Following on by discussing the steps they need to take to get help; for example after recognising feeling unsafe, reacting by running to find help and reporting what happened to someone (5 safety helpers).

This is also an opportunity for parents to start a conversation with their children about personal safety.

Students may wear something red on this day.
