Year 2
Dear Year 2 Parents and Caregivers,
Below is a snapshot of recent activities, alongside important dates for the next two weeks.

Literacy
These two weeks students have been crafting informative paragraphs about their chosen animal, focusing on its diet and survival. We have been building our writing skills through boundary punctuation, constructing compound sentences, and revising and editing their draft. In our phonics work, students have been exploring the different ways the /j/ and /g/ sounds can be represented in writing. It has been wonderful to see them apply these new skills with growing independence.
Maths
In Maths, students have begun exploring measurement, with a focus on length and mass. They have been learning to measure and compare objects using both informal units, such as blocks and hand spans, and formal units, such as centimetres, metres, grams and kilograms. Students are also developing their problem-solving skills by choosing the most appropriate unit of measurement when solving worded problems. Science
In Science, students have been learning about the needs and life cycles of living things through hands-on investigations. They planted cress seeds and explored the conditions plants need to grow, including water, light and a suitable environment. Students also designed and created butterfly enclosures, considering how to provide a safe and appropriate habitat. These experiences have encouraged students to observe closely, ask questions and make thoughtful connections between living things and their environments.

Reading: Ancient Rome
Students have thoroughly enjoyed learning about Ancient Rome. As we near the end of our Core Knowledge unit, they are beginning to recognise the significant influence the Roman civilisation had on later societies and many aspects of the modern world. Students have been using passages from the text to identify key information and apply their understanding to confidently answer inferential and evaluative questions. It has been wonderful to see such strong engagement with this topic.

Melbourne Museum Excursion
We had the pleasure of taking our Year 3 students to the Melbourne Museum to visit the Roman Exhibition. We were incredibly impressed by their enthusiasm and engagement as they immersed themselves in every aspect of the experience. Museum staff and members of the public commented on the students’ respectful behaviour, their excitement as they explored the sculptures and artefacts, and their impressive knowledge of Ancient Rome. It was wonderful to see their learning come to life beyond the classroom. What the students said: Will Joy: I loved that the Roman Exhibit had real artefacts. My favourite room was the gods and goddesses' room and I was surprised to see that their noses were still there on the sculptures. Henry: My favourite part was Museum Alive narrated by David Attenborough because I found it interesting to see how animals evolved to today. Alyssa: I liked the Imax because it had Museum Alive in it. I loved it because it showed you about the historical creatures before our time. Ilma: I loved the Roman Exhibit and the Wondrous Planet Exhibit. The Roman one had really artefacts and looked so cool with the projections of Rome in the past and present day. Muse: My favourite part was the IMAX because it was so cool seeing animals come to life. I did have to hold onto Henry as the dinosaur came to life because it came up so close! Edie: My favourite part was the IMAX because I found it interesting learning about all of the extinct animals. Yuno: The sculptures were amazing. I found it interesting that if they had no nose, that meant that they were not favoured. Amy: I liked the IMAX. It was cool to see things in 3D and see animals from the past. I especially like the Dodos and the legend, David Attenborough. Rose: It was cool to see real ancient Roman artefacts. |
Kind Regards,
Year 3 Team

Year 6

Writing In Writing, after publishing their narrative texts, students have been busy creating a picture storybook for their Prep Buddies. As part of this learning, they explored how images and text work together to build meaning, engage readers, and strengthen a story’s message. Students also experimented with rhyme, rhythm, and carefully crafted sentence patterns to create books that flow smoothly when read aloud. By designing their stories for a specific audience, they thoughtfully tailored their message and morals to connect with and inspire their Prep Buddies.
Reading In Reading, students have been finishing the final chapters of our class text, A Night Divided by Jennifer A. Nielsen. Throughout this novel study, they've been working through comprehension questions that push them beyond basic recall to analyse character motivations, interpret symbolism, and make inferences about the text. Students have explained why characters made certain choices and what the author's messages are about courage, family, and identity. This written response work builds essential skills in textual analysis, requiring students to support their ideas with evidence from the text and use subject-specific vocabulary.
Mathematics In Maths, students have been multiplying decimals to tenths, hundredths, and thousandths, developing their understanding of place value and operations with decimals. They've also been calculating elapsed time and learning to use Cartesian planes to plot coordinates and develop spatial reasoning skills.
Wellbeing In Wellbeing, students have been learning about help-seeking and identifying trusted adults in their lives. We've discussed who they can approach when they need support, how to communicate what they need, and practised the actual steps involved in reaching out for help. |
