Ocean Grove Primary School Achieves 4-Star ResourceSmart Status!

We are thrilled to announce that Ocean Grove Primary School has officially achieved 4-Star ResourceSmart School status after recently being awarded our Water Star.

This achievement recognises the hard work of our students, staff and wider school community in reducing water consumption and improving water awareness across the school. To earn our Water Star, students participated in water audits, investigated ways to reduce water waste, monitored water use, promoted water-saving behaviours, and contributed to projects that improve the sustainability of our school grounds.

This milestone builds on our previous achievements in waste, biodiversity and core sustainability practices. Our next goal is to achieve our energy Star, where students will investigate energy use around the school and identify ways to reduce our environmental footprint even further.

Resource Smart School Awards- By Bonnie Mc (Sustainability Leader)

The Sustainability captains and Mrs Earle went to the MCG on Thursday as we were nominated for a ResourceSmart Schools Award for Campus Infrastructure and Operations School of the Year.

This incredible experience included an awards ceremony (presented by Dirtgirl). We also got to walk around the Olympic Room and its adjoining foyer and look at stalls showcasing work from other schools. So many finalists shared fabulous ideas that have inspired us to initiate exciting projects in the future.

And the food! The menu was not only delicious but also designed around sustainability. All the food was vegetarian to help reduce our carbon footprint, and we were even able to eat lunch in the seats of the MCG.

Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to take home the award, but being nominated was very special. As a school, we should be extremely proud of being in the top three, as well as being a four-star school. We should also be proud of the amazing work we have done to improve our school environment through sustainability initiatives and by making our school a nicer place for learning.

It was a great experience, and we hope our school is able to attend again next year.

National Tree Planting Day – Thursday 24 July

Our students will be taking part in National Tree Planting Day! Students will participate in planting activities and complete sustainability challenges throughout the day.

E-Waste Week – 3–7 August

Start collecting your unwanted electronic waste at home! During E-Waste Week, students can bring old and broken electronic items to school for responsible recycling. Items such as old cables, chargers, keyboards, computer accessories, and small electronic devices can be recycled rather than ending up in landfill. Our Sustainability Leaders will visit classrooms each day to collect donations.

Community Compost Program

We are excited to launch our Community Compost Program next term! Every Friday morning, families are invited to bring suitable food scraps to school to be added to our compost system. More information about accepted items will be shared early next term.

Nude Food Reminder

A reminder to families to support our Nude Food initiative by packing waste-free lunches whenever possible. Using reusable containers instead of single-use packaging helps reduce the amount of rubbish produced at school.

Active Wednesday

Don't forget that every Wednesday is Active Wednesday! Students are encouraged to walk, ride, scoot, or skate to school where it is safe and practical to do so. Active travel helps reduce traffic congestion around the school, lowers emissions, and promotes healthy lifestyles.
