This term, students will study the novels Storm Boy by Colin Thiele and The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. Through Storm Boy, students will explore the story of a young boy and his special bond with a pelican, set in the Coorong region of South Australia, while examining themes of friendship, belonging, nature, and change. In The Wild Robot, students will follow Roz, a robot who learns to survive and build meaningful relationships on a remote island, exploring themes of empathy, cooperation, adaptability, and the connection between humans and the natural world. These engaging texts will provide opportunities for rich discussion, comprehension, vocabulary study and sentence level written responses. We will continue to engage in daily spelling and weekly reading focus groups and reading fluency activities.

Throughout the term, students will develop their comprehension skills by using graphic and semantic organisers, visualisation, question answering, and comprehension monitoring strategies to deepen their understanding of texts.

WRITING

In writing, they will strengthen sentence construction through sentence expansion, complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions, and summary sentence writing. Students will also plan and write an information report about the cultural significance of the Coorong and create a persuasive letter expressing their opinion about having a robot in the home, focusing on the structure, language features, and organisation of each text type.

Social & Emotional Learning

This term in SEL, we will continue our sessions of The Resilience Project

The weekly lessons will continue to build students’ social and emotional wellbeing by strengthening the core practices of Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness, and Emotional Literacy (GEM). Across these lessons, students will explore ways to appreciate positive experiences, understand and respond to the feelings of others, practise being present in the moment, and recognize and manage a range of emotions. Through discussions, reflective activities, and practical strategies, students will learn about resilience, positive relationships, self-awareness, and effective coping skills that support their wellbeing both at school and in everyday life.
