- The Grade 5 maths curriculum assumes that all students know their multiplication tables. If your child is still working on this skill, we ask that you support them by finding some time to practise. If you would like suggestions about how to practise, please get in touch with your child's classroom teacher.
- Grade 6 Leaders sell icy poles each Monday and Tuesday at lunchtime for $1

STEM Room Donations Needed
We are currently collecting recycled materials for our exciting Term 3 Science Projects in the STEM room. We would greatly appreciate donations of clean items such as plastic water bottles or soft drink bottles, shoe boxes, plastic lids, and cardboard tubing or paper rolls (please no toilet rolls).
Donations can be dropped off at the STEM room at any time. Thank you for your continued support in helping provide valuable hands-on learning opportunities for our students.
Learning in Action
Word Work
In Term 3, students will begin exploring the meanings of words derived from the Greek base phobe-phobia, meaning to fear, Latin base clear-clar, meaning clear/bright, Latin base vict-vince, meaning conquer/overcome. They will focus on how the addition of different prefixes and suffixes modify the base to create new meanings.
Literature
In Term 3, students will embark on a new novel for their Literature unit. We will be reading Tom Appleby - Convict Boy by Jackie French. We will follow Tom’s journey through his childhood, starting with the loss of his father. This loss has a huge bearing on Tom’s life, leading to his back breaking work as a chimney sweep, before his transportation to Australia as a convict. This novel links perfectly with the learning we undertook in Term 2 in Knowledge Rich, Life in Australia in the 1800s.
➗ Maths
This term we will be exploring many different mathematical concepts.
Fractions: Students will delve into adding and subtraction fractions with the same or related denominators. They will use their knowledge of equivalent fractions to solve these problems.
Decimals: Students will round decimals, record decimals in standard and nonstandard form and rename decimals to solve problems. They will also find the connection between decimals and units of measurement.
Angles: Students will measure angles using a protractor. They will identify the obtuse, acute, reflex, revolutionary and right angles. Students will measure the interior angles of polygons and use this knowledge to determine whether shapes have tessellated together.
Location: Students will identify and plot coordinates on a cartesian plane.
Measurement: Students will measure mass, length and capacity and choose the appropriate units for each scenario.
Knowledge Rich
In Term 3, students will complete a unit on Australian Democracy. They will explore the key features of a democratic system of government, the roles and responsibilities of each level of government, and how these levels work together to serve the community. Students will also learn about the electoral process and the importance of civic participation. Other key concepts include the role of referendums in shaping Australia’s Constitution and the responsibilities of elected representatives. Did you know that the establishment of the eight-hour workday in Australia, and the origins of Labour Day, can be traced back to the actions of Melbourne stonemasons in 1856?
Wellbeing
We are starting the term by exploring intense emotions and triggers, and by practising using language to describe emotional intensity because people react differently.
This means that while one person may have a strong reaction to a certain experience, someone else may have a milder reaction. Part of being a supportive friend is learning to notice how other people respond. Sometimes we can tell by watching them and ‘reading’ their body language. However, sometimes we need to ask people to find out how they feel.
Students will also describe events or experiences that might trigger different levels of emotional intensity over a day.
