Literacy -
In Term 3, students will explore a range of engaging texts that include stories such as Giraffes Can’t Dance, Farmer John’s Tractor, Wombat Stew and Wombat. Through these texts, students will build their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. We will focus on understanding stories, talking about characters and events, and sharing ideas with others.
In reading, students will continue learning their sounds and practising how to blend them to read words. They will also work on reading with more confidence and understanding what they read.
In writing, students will continue to practise forming letters correctly, writing simple sentences, and using capital letters and full stops. They will also continue to learn about the parts of a sentence, including who, what is happening, where and when. Students will extend their ideas by using describing words and joining ideas with conjunctions such as “and”, “but” and “because”. They will also write about the stories we read in class.
At home, families can support learning by reading together each day and talking about stories and picture books.
We are looking forward to a fun and busy term of learning in Literacy!
Knowledge Rich-
This term, our Knowledge Rich unit is all about farms! Throughout the term, students will discover where many of the foods and products we use every day come from by exploring life on a farm and learning about the important role farms play in our communities.
Students will learn about a variety of farm animals and their young, including cows, sheep, pigs and chickens. We will explore what these animals need to live, grow and stay healthy, as well as the important jobs farmers do to care for them. We will also investigate the crops that are grown on farms, how food is produced, and the journey it takes from the farm to our tables.
Our learning will be brought to life through a range of exciting, hands-on experiences. Students will have the opportunity to try their hand at milking a model cow, practise shearing a model sheep, and explore different fruits and vegetables before using fresh produce to create and enjoy our very own classroom fruit salad. These engaging activities will help students make meaningful connections between their learning and the real world while building rich vocabulary and background knowledge.
This unit will also prepare students for our exciting Myuna Farm excursion, where they will have the opportunity to meet farm animals up close, explore a real farm environment, and apply everything they have learned throughout the term. We can't wait to see our young farmers in action!
Maths -
In Term 3, Prep students will continue to build on their strong mathematical foundations through engaging, hands-on learning experiences. Students will further develop their understanding of addition and subtraction by exploring a range of strategies, including counting on, counting back, and using part-part-whole knowledge to solve simple number problems. They will continue to strengthen their fluency with counting and place value by working with numbers to 20 and beyond, practising ordering, comparing and representing numbers in different ways, and explaining their thinking using mathematical language.
Students will also deepen their understanding of measurement as they explore and compare length, mass and capacity. Through practical activities, they will use informal units to measure objects, make comparisons, and describe attributes using everyday language such as longer, shorter, heavier and lighter. Throughout the term, students will continue to build confidence in problem-solving, reasoning and explaining their strategies, while working collaboratively during games, hands-on investigations and targeted Maths tasks.
Students will also continue practicing their individual Maths Masters goals. We look forward to an exciting term of growth, curiosity and learning.
Wellbeing
This term, our wellbeing learning will focus on helping students build confidence, resilience and positive relationships through the Respectful Relationships (RRRR) program. Students will explore positive coping, problem solving, stress management and help-seeking through engaging, age-appropriate activities.
Through discussions, games, role plays and hands-on learning, students will develop strategies to manage big emotions, solve everyday problems, recognise when they need support, and identify trusted adults who can help them. These lessons help students strengthen friendships, build resilience, and develop the social and emotional skills they need to thrive both at school and beyond.
