National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS)
This year NSS takes place on Wednesday 22 May 2024 at 12:00pm. Classes will share the story in their classrooms.
National Simultaneous Storytime is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 24th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
By facilitating NSS we aim to:
- promote the value of reading and literacy,
- promote the value and fun of books,
- promote an Australian writer and publisher,
- celebrate and promote storytime activities in public libraries, school libraries, classrooms and communities around the country,
- and provide opportunities to involve parents, caregivers, the media, and others to participate in and enjoy the occasion.
About the Book
Bowerbird Blues follows the journey of a feverishly determined bowerbird on a mission to collect not just all the fabulous blue items he can possibly find but also something else he can't quite pinpoint. The bowerbird's collection dominated by plastic caps, straws and tags invites reflection on environmental pollution and its challenges.
Why do bowerbirds collect blue things?
Satin Bowerbird
The Satin Bowerbird (Ptilonorhynchus violaceus) gets its name from its habit of building a bower out of sticks, and decorating it with blue items, like stolen pegs, straws, and bits of litter, as well as blue flowers and berries. Male Satin Bowerbirds have striking blue-black feathers and vibrant violet eyes.
