Victoria Police invites Victorians to complete the Community Sentiment Survey

From 1 May to 31 May 2024 the annual survey is open which supports our commitment to Neighbourhood Policing, and asks Victorians to tell us their key safety concerns, how they would like to interact with police (outside of an emergency) and where we can focus efforts to prevent and deter crime. The survey is quick, anonymous and for people of all backgrounds who live, work and socialise in Victoria.

Accessing the survey

The survey is available from 1 May 2024 via the Engage Victoria website at: engage.vic.gov.au/vicpol-2024

This year we also have accessible survey formats available.

How we’ll use responses

Survey responses help us identify the issues our communities care most about, and help us develop local ways to tackle them. This includes working with partners on local safety plans to understand and address the key drivers of local crime and safety concerns.

In the coming months, Victoria Police will share a summary of key findings on the Engage Victoria website. Local summaries will also be shared on Victoria Police Facebook (Eyewatch) pages.

Sharing the survey with your networks

A Stakeholder Kit is attached with more information, and links to promotional materials.

You can help support survey promotions by:

  • completing the survey yourselves and in your households
  • forwarding this email and stakeholder kit to your professional networks
  • sharing links to the survey via social media posts and stories
  • printing and displaying flyers in public or community spaces
  • displaying screen tiles on public or community display screens
  • including short news items in newsletters

 For more information

If anyone wants to find out more about the survey, they can contact Victoria Police at SDTC-PROGRAM-MGT-OFF@police.vic.gov.au

Give a new beginning in your local community Support The Salvation Army’s 60th Red Shield Appeal

The Salvation Army in Kingston City, based in Dingley, is urging the local community to get involved in this year’s Red Shield Appeal, which will raise vital funds to continue supporting the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in our region.

Across the country, the Salvos are aiming to raise $38 million for the Red Shield Appeal, which is Australia’s largest and longest-running door-knock appeal. This year, Australia’s most trusted charity* is celebrating 60 years of the Red Shield Appeal.

“Times are tough. We are seeing more people come through our doors every week, new families who have never done it this tough before, and people are feeling the pinch. They are skipping meals, unable to afford utility bills or medication for their kids. This is why we need your support,” said The Salvation Army’s Major Jennifer Cloke.

There are many ways you can get involved – collections in shopping centres or other key locations, door-knocking, online fundraising or organising a collection at your workplace, school or sporting event.

“There is no better way to support your community than through volunteering and we would love to have you as part of our Red Shield Appeal army this year. Grab a mate, some work colleagues or the entire family and join us. We can’t do our work in the community without you,” said Major Andrea Elkington.

The Red Shield Appeal weekend is May 25 and 26, but there are many volunteering opportunities throughout the month of May. If you are able to give some of your time, please reach out to your local Salvos by emailing andrea.elkington@salvationarmy.org.au

Major Cloke said: “The Kingston and surrounding regions need your support more than ever. The Salvos are grateful for the generosity we have received over the past 60 years of the Red Shield Appeal and we hope to see our community come together again this year as we seek to make it another 60 years. From 1st July through to end of April 2024, The Salvation Army – Kingston City Salvos has given out over $333,000.00 of Emergency Relief and the need is growing ”. All funds raised locally will remain in the local community, allowing the Salvos to meet the specific needs of the most disadvantaged and marginalised members of our region.

Across Australia last year, through The Salvation Army’s network of over 400 centres and 2,000 services in areas such as homelessness, family and domestic violence, youth, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, financial hardship and much more, the Salvos provided:-

  • Assistance to one person every 17 seconds
  • More than 1.67 million sessions of care to over 250,000 people in need
  • Over 1.2 million bed nights to those who needed accommodation
  • More than 1.63 million meals to those who accessed our homelessness services.

Volunteers for Red Shield Appeal needed for Sunday May 26th

The Salvation Army is seeking the support of parents and community people to assist on Sunday 26th May at the corner of Warrigal Road and Centre Dandenong Roads, Cheltenham. It would be great to see  teams of people who are part of the Westall Secondary College community chatting and rattling some tins! We would be asking for about two to three hours of people's time anywhere from 9am to 5pm.

We are aiming to have at least 30 volunteers so that we are able to operate in shifts with 10 people on at a time. We see this as a great opportunity for your staff to join us as a team and work to raise much needed funds for Kingston Corps so that we are able to continue to provide the various services that we do for our community's most vulnerable.

We would love to hear from you by the 17th May if you can help out.  Alternatively, if there is a larger group a response to this email would be great. Any support you can offer us would be greatly appreciated. The day itself is going to be fun, please don't hesitate to reach out if you require more information or have any questions.

Autism Connect

Saver Plus Program, delivered through Berry Street.

Saver Plus is a free matched savings and financial education program that matches participants’ savings, dollar for dollar, up to $500, for education costs such as uniforms, books, excursions, sports fees and laptops.  Over 55,000 participants have benefitted from Saver Plus.

With the increasing cost of living impacting so many Australian families, helping to ease the financial strain for low-income earners where able, is important to our team at Berry Street. The advice provided through our Money Minded program is intended to not only assist families to achieve their saving goal of $500, but to develop lifelong financial skills and habits as well as build their financial confidence.

About Saver Plus

Saver Plus was developed by Brotherhood of St Laurence and ANZ in 2003 and is now delivered nationally through Berry Street and The Smith Family. The program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services and ANZ.

Participants set a savings goal for education costs, make regular deposits into a savings account over 10 months, and attend financial skills workshops. At the end of the program their savings are matched by ANZ, dollar for dollar, up to $500, to be used for education costs such as uniforms, books, excursions, sports fees, and laptops.

Participants are also supported over the 10 months by one of our dedicated Savings Coaches who will stay connected with the participant to guide them through the program.

Parents are eligible to join Saver Plus if they meet all the following the criteria:

  • be over 18 years old.
  • have a Centrelink Health Care or Pensioner Concession card.
  • be in receipt of an eligible Commonwealth social security benefit, allowance or payment.
  • have some regular income from work (themselves or their partner) including casual, part-time, full-time or seasonal employment; and
  • have a child enrolled at school (or enrolled to start school) or attend vocational education themselves.

Please find attached further information on the program and contacts for Saver Plus.
