Visual Arts

Last week in Art the Foundation students completed a classic ANZAC silhouette.

Firstly the students read and viewed the picture story book “My Granddad Marches on ANZAC day” and the dawn service was discussed.

Students identified sunrise colours, and we learnt that they can be called ‘warm’ colours. Students painted their sunrise using these warm colours.

Students in 1/2 completed a printing and drawing activity based on the red poppy. Students took these ANZAC artworks home.

Students in 3/4 considered different symbols that are used for ANZAC day and read through the different phrases contained in the Ode.

Some students also had lesson time considering how different fonts can have different effects, e.g. more curly fonts can look old fashioned.

Students chose from a variety of watercolours and graphic markers to work on a background for the phrases contained in the Ode.

Students in 5/6 also considered ANZAC symbolism, this time viewing and responding to images and information about ANZAC and other war medals.

Students were taught that the materials medals were/ are made from can be symbolic and that the colours of the ribbons also had symbolic meanings.

Students firstly spent time designing and medal that could be used to reward a positive human characteristic that they value, e.g. bravery, loyalty or good humour.

In the second lesson students then made their medals using clay and clay tools. Here are some examples:
