Australian Rules Football News!

On Wednesday 24th April, the Intermediate Boys played their football games against Sunbury Downs and Sunbury College. Gisborne Secondary College won their first game against Sunbury Downs College and came up against a stronger Sunbury College in their second game of the day. Sunbury College made a start to the game taking the lead early, but the Gisborne boys were nipping at their heals by the last quarter. Gisborne made ground on Sunbury College but unfortunately ran out of time and finished 1 point in arrears. Given Sunbury College won both their games, they are through to region championships.

The Gisborne Secondary College girls played a single game against Sunbury College and were far and above the stronger team on the day with a convincing win. The girls were to play Staughton College in a Division final, but they have forfeited leaving Gisborne Girls to progress to the Region Finals scheduled for 23rd July at Galvin Park Werribee.

Year 7 and 8 Boys will be playing their games on Thursday 16th May and the Junior girls Monday 20th May.

Athletics Carnival

On Tuesday 14th May, Gisborne Secondary College held its annual Athletics Carnival at Melton Athletics Centre. Congratulations to all students who came and enjoyed the day. There was entertaining competition amongst competitors all day on the track and in the field events. For the first time, the College and students welcomed the Year 12 class of into the Athletics centre with a clap and a cheer as they took a lap of honour finishing up with their annual Athletics photo. Congratulations to the year 12 students for bringing a festive vibe to the day with their colourful and creative costumes including ‘3 little pigs’, and a selection of sheep that seemed to spend the day moulting; we even saw an appearance of ‘Steve’ from Minecraft.

With Javelin yet to be completed in a safer environment at school, and some bonus points for attendance to be added for participation, we will be in a position to announce the winning house and age group champions in the next newsletter.

Soccer

The Senior Boys played tremendously well to make it through to the finals and played a thrilling final against Kurunjang College. Over many years, our senior boys soccer teams have come close to taking out the Division soccer competition and this year we are proud to announce that in a thrilling finale, the Gisborne Secondary College boys were victorious over the Kurunjang College. They progress to Region Finals which are played on Tuesday 30th July at Keilor Park.

On Friday the 3rd of May, the girls of Gisborne secondary college scraped together a team to compete in the annual school soccer competition, calling ourselves the Lean-a-nators, in reference to our coach Mr. Lean. The team comprised Year 12s and Year 11s, most of us having never played the game before, not to worry we googled the rules on the way to the game. This competition was about making the most of our last years of school and getting out of our comfort zone with a few family members coming down to watch the spectacle.

Our first game against Sunbury Downs College we managed to draw 0-0 which we still considered an achievement and warmed us up for our second game against Melton Christian College. Although we were defeated 2-0, this game really brought out the teamwork and competitiveness in us as the team walked away less embarrassed than we thought but overall proud of our effort. I doubt many of us would ever voluntarily put the uniform on again, but it has created a unique memory for us. We hope next year's girls can continue the legacy that is the Lean-a-nators.
