Inquiry - First Contact

During term two, we are building our knowledge of Australia. We are learning about the Indigenous Australians and the first European settlers. European settlement had an impact on both Indigenous and European people. We are so excited to be participating in this Inquiry Unit and really enjoyed our incursion with Jim Poutler - Local Historian (What was Warrandyte like in the past).

Jim shared about his great great great Grandparents - John and MaryAnne Chivers who came to the Warrandyte area. They set up their home where Petty's Orchard is. John and Margaret worked for James Anderson who had chosen the land near a fork in the river. The river provided boundaries for his house and enabled to see any visitors that were coming to visit.

We have been reading about Captain Cooks journey to Australia. Learning about some of the wild weather he encountered, where they stopped for supplies and how long it took for him to travel all the way from England to Australia. The students have also been researching who was the first person to discover Australia, where they were from and when that occurred.
