IDAHOBIT Day

On May 17th,  SCSC celebrated IDAHOBIT day, the International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination.

Our school captains were invited to a flag raising ceremony at the Surf Coast Shire Council this morning, and at lunchtime students participated in a trivia in the library run by Q Hub. There was also a growing respect activity, where they coloured a leaf and wrote a message of inclusion.

Was a wonderful way to end the week!

VCE Literature

In VCE Literature, we are studying ‘Father Comes Home From The Wars’, a play written by Suzan Lori Parks.  By turns philosophical and playful, lyrical and earthy, Suzan-Lori Parks’s new play, “Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3),” swoops, leaps, dives and soars across three endlessly stimulating hours, reimagining a turbulent turning point in American history through an absurdist, contemporary lens.

Parks not only wrote the play but developed six original songs to be performed within the play. These range from Blues to Texas two-step, to country, to rap, the music imbues the historical play with a modern flair.

Our lovely music teacher, Judy McLaren, generously learnt the guitar songs and vocals and performed them to the VCE Literature class to contextualise them.

A big thank you from the whole class and Miss Griffin to Judy for taking the time to learn these songs for us. You are a legend!

Gems In STEM Incursion

On 2nd May, Gems in STEM program presented to Year 9 & 10 students at SCSC.

The Program aims to inspire and help students find a passion for purpose in what they do, with an emphasis on STEM.

After the presentation, students stayed back and asked questions from our speakers, in smaller groups, about subject choices and different universities in Victoria.

The Gems in STEM Program aims to inspire, motivate and involve the next generation to ensure that every child who has a passion in STEM is supported on their journey

Voc. Major help out at the Community Lunch

Students in our Vocational Major program were invited to help run a monthly community lunch organised by the Torquay Community House.  Layla Sheedy, Ruby Holmes, Larsen Stedwell, Colin Hunwick, Taj Boxall, Cylas Wilson and Daniel McHugh helped prepare, cater and clean up after the lunch which consisted included roughly 40 members of the local community.  It was a great opportunity for these students to get out into the community and make meaningful connections.

Tribe of Mentors ~ General Plumbing

We were treated to another great presentation during our 'Tribe Of Mentors' where we learned about General Plumbing with Will Maas.

Our Vocational Major students were treated to some awesome hands-on learning opportunities from qualified tradies!  They not only got to have a go at a variety of tools and skills but also discussed what employers look for and want to see with their apprentices.

Thank you very much for taking the time out with our students!

Rostrum Find Your Voice Competition

Gem participated in the Rostrum find your voice public speaking competition (https://www.rostrum.com.au/voy/information-for-all-students/) and she did amazingly well!  She participated in the heat with 5 other kids – 4 from The Geelong College (all year 8 and 9) and one from Western Heights.  They were all required to do a six minute speech from a selection of 6 different topics. Gemma selected “Age is no barrier” and spoke confidently and enthusiastically, with plenty of expression so really stood out.  Although she didn't quite make it to the final, Gem absolutely represented SurfCoast Secondary beautifully.

VET Sport & Recreation

Pictured are our VET Sport & Recreation and the new Surf Coast Sports Hub, utilising the great facilities to learn about different fitness components and training methods.

United Nations Mock Debate

Following on from our internal United Nations Mock Debate last week, some of our students were selected to represent SCSC at the Geelong Competition against a range of schools, hosted by Geelong High School.

Utilising expert analytical, communication and collaboration skills we wish them luck for the rest of the day!

Getting Ready for Work

Our Year  10 'Getting Ready for Work' students helped pull stinging nettle out of the garden to prepare the garden beds for winter planting.

Top Designs

Top Designs celebrates the innovation of Victoria’s VCE and VCE VET design students, offering insight into the future of socially conscious and responsive design. Our students headed into the city to enjoy this wonderful exhibition.  It was a great opportunity for our Year 11 students to see the extents they can go with Visual Communication Design in Year 12 and get inspiration for their own projects.

Indonesian Sister School

Surf Coast Secondary College has developed a long-lasting relationship with our sister school from Lombok, Indonesia and we recently had the opportunity to host 4 students who stayed with us for two weeks. Surf Coast combined with Matthew Flinders and Newcomb Secondary to host almost 40 students.

We had four welcoming host families who were extremely generous in opening their homes to host these students. These wonderfully generous families included the: Cummins, Bowness, Sneddens, Mas and Viners. A huge thank you to these families for their support.

The students got to experience a wide range of events and activities that showed them the Australian culture and way of life. From Great Ocean Road tours, AFL games in Melbourne, museums, Universities, Indigenous centres and dinners with all host families.

Below is a first-hand experience from one of our host students, Xas Cummins.

“I really enjoyed hosting Roberto, he was very respectful and embraced each new experience. His sense of humour was unmatched. We were able to experience an AFL game whilst he was here and it was a great atmosphere. I am looking forward to our next visit to Indonesia”.

A big thank you to our school staff who assisted these students and guided the process smoothly from start to end: Andrew Brown, Ben McKay, Jack Taylor and Jacinta Pritchard. Well done, team!
