Culture Studies

In culture studies last week, Foundation and 1/2 students learnt why African beadwork have a cultural significance within the African community. The beads are often worn as a from of expression and identity as well as for protection and healing purposes. Foundation students made a craft necklace out of a paper plate where they used oil pastels to decorate, colour and create patterns. The Year 1/2 students made an African inspired beaded bracelet. Students were able to choose their beads, looking at colour, shape, and pattern combinations, they then threaded the beads onto some florist wire to create the bracelet. Students also learnt about different styles of African dancing, focusing on a South African dance that is performed wearing gumboots, the ‘Gumboot’ dance. Where students learnt how to stomp, slap and clap their legs and feet as if they were wearing gumboots.

Visual Arts

This week in Visual Arts, Foundation students have started to focus on Australian animals, where they made a kookaburra out of a paper plate and added coloured paper to create a paper collage. Year 1/2 students began a new art piece, ‘Coral Reef’ collage. They painted a sea background piece, using water colour paints. They then continued to paint sheets of paper, using different of colours to help create their coral reef. Students were able to then cut their painted paper into coral reef plant shapes, overlapping their pieces to create a coral reef scene. Year 3/4 students began to create a ‘Rainforest Camouflage’ art piece. They used various shades of green and brown paper in shapes of leaves, tall grass, and rocks. Students were able to arrange and overlap their cut-out pieces to create a rainforest scene. Year 5/6 students began to create a ‘Cardboard Animal Portrait’ focusing on African animals. Students were able to choose an African animal portrait template, tracing the animal face onto cardboard then cut all the different facial features and glued them onto a cardboard base. Students were able make layers of the different facial features, which gave their art piece a 3D look. Students were also able to make a special craft piece for Mother’s / Special Person’s Day.
