Science week.

Mrs Ahumada's Science Day Activities.

Our group worked on designing and testing, an important role of all scientists. We made tin foil boats that used only one small piece of foil and needed to carry or hold a load of marbles without sinking. Students were challenged to hold the most marbles in their boats to win a prize. Our winning team was Jack Marshall and Kayden Williams whose clever boat design was able to hold 100 marbles. Fantastic work boys!

The other experiment saw students creating popsicle catapults that could shoot pom poms. Students had to carefully create their catapult design and then test out how far it could shoot the pom poms into the air or over a distance by making small adjustments to the catapult's design.

Mrs Hayes Science Day Activities.

In the 1/2 room students participated in two Science Activities. Younger and older students collaborated to perform these activities.

The first experiment students participated in was: The Water Experiment. The students learn about how the candle burning creates a chemical reaction. The flame burns both the paraffin (candle wax) and the oxygen under the glass. This reaction uses up oxygen and creates water and carbon dioxide as a result. Twice as much oxygen is burned than carbon dioxide produced, so the volume of air in the glass decreases.

The other Science experiment that the students worked on was making Blobs in a Bottle. The students learnt that the oil floats on top of the water because it is less dense or lighter than water. The food coloring has the same density as the water so it sinks through the oil and mixes with the water. When you add the tablet it sinks to the bottom then starts to dissolve. As it dissolves it makes gas, carbon dioxide. Gas or air is lighter than water so it floats to the top. The air bubbles bring some colored water with them to the top. When the air comes out of the colored water blob, the water gets heavy again and sinks. It does this over and over again until the tablet is completely dissolved.

Students worked well together and it was lovely to see them mixing across the school.
