Kitchen Garden

The year 2 students had their final kitchen garden session today with a focus on lemons and insects. In the kitchen the students made a delicious lemon slice using dairy free ingredients as a way to create understanding and inclusion for people with allergies and food intolerances.

Outside in the garden the students  deepened their understandings about bugs in the garden and that some are good, beneficial whilst others are pests. A healthy balance ensures a harmonious environment where food and insects thrive together. As a way to entice beneficial insects to the garden, the students made bug hotels using natural materials such as pine cones, twigs, rocks, tan bark, flowers and leaves, and wedged them into a reused container to place in their home gardens. Discussions focused on reusing the plastic container instead of buying a new one for this purpose. The plastic will also protect the hotel from weather, showcasing the benefits of plastic but also giving an example of how to reuse items to prevent them from waste.

Next week the year 1 students will recommence their kitchen garden program.

Year 4 Stewardship

The year 4s have begun a project where they can share their understandings with other members of our community and leave a legacy for years to come. We will share more about this project in the coming weeks.

Year 6 Sustainability Leaders

Julian and Charleen in year 6 represented our school in participating in this week's virtual Go Green Summit hosted by Mazenod College. This involved being online and listening in to presentations by other students at other schools about all things related to sustainability and the environment . We also had an opportunity to showcase our school and our practices which were well received. Julian and Charleen spoke very well, asking and answering questions clearly and confidently. It is clear they both share an interest in the environment and want to contribute to positive change.

As a quick win, Julian and Charleen are going to speak to the whole school to initiate a trial of sharing landfill bins between classes to reduce the number of plastic bin liners being used every day. They will speak to the school at Assembly next Friday.
