Grade 5/6 Students

Celebrating our fantastic Fives and sensational Sixes!

Reading

In Reading, the students have been analysing various text types to identify the author’s message. They have used their knowledge of inferencing to create their own advertisements with an inferred message. Last week, we began our paired reading sessions. Students have been given differentiated texts which they read to their partner practising fluency, accuracy and reading rate. This allows all students to develop and improve their reading through an evidenced based approach.

Writing

In Writing, the students have been working meticulously through their information reports and explanation reports which will accompany their natural disaster model. Additionally, there has been a significant focus on how vocabulary can alter and enhance meaning, feeling and opinion. The students have been experimenting with text structures and language features to establish coherent and thoughtful reports.

Maths

In Maths, 5/6 students have begun a unit on angles. We have been identifying various angles which include acute, obtuse, right, straight and reflex angles. Furthermore, they have been learning the process of using a protractor to determine the specific degree between two intersecting lines. Lastly, students have been learning how to calculate angles and missing angles and using a protractor to check for accuracy.

Financial Incursion

Over the course of the last month, the students attended Money Workshops which explored how people think, feel and act with money. One of the big takeaways was the HEARD framework which encouraged students this think amount money from multiple perspectives.

Integrated

On Wednesday, we had the pleasure of hosting our Natural Disaster Expo. Students presented three pieces of work, a model, an information report and an explanation report which was centred around a specific natural disaster. It was wonderful to showcase the fantastic pieces which reflected the hard work the students dedicated to this project.
