Deakin Science & Engineering Challenge
Year 9 & 10 students were invited to apply to be involved in the Deakin Engineering Challenge. This is a nationwide STEM program, students compete in engaging hands-on activities involving the principles of science, engineering and technology. Students were set the challenges: design a bridge, design a Mars All terrain buggy, network a city, design codes for communications and scheduling, design a plane and tower structure. All students worked collaboratively and productively to complete the challenge to a high level, with our school finishing second of 16 schools from our region! Congratulations to all involved on your success, and for taking the opportunity to represent Belmont High School at the challenge!
BioLAB: Year 9 Biomimicry with Wildlife Exposures
Each Year 9 class had the opportunity to attend BioLAB for a session run in collaboration with Wildlife Exposures. The session focussed on Biomimicry – how scientists utilise innovations in nature to improve on technology. The program covers key information that will be utilised in the science classroom during Term 4. All science teachers were also involved in a professional development in this program. Activities undertaken include thermal imaging of a range of ectothermic and endothermic animals, microscopy of a huge variety of animals to observe compositions of their external structures and discussions of how these adaptations can be mimicked in technology. Students also had the opportunity to interact with a range of animals, please see the photos below! A massive thank you to BioLAB and Wildlife Exposures for their time and opportunity given to our Year 9 students.
Roslyn Primary School STEAM Challenge
Year 7P SEALP were involved in a STEAM Challenge with the 4/5/6 cohort at Roslyn Primary School. During a double session, students worked with a group of Roslyn students to produce a musical instrument out of recyclable materials. BHS students were leading a small group to plan, create and evaluate their project. They provided innovative ideas to support and motivate their primary school collaborators. 7P should be immensely proud of their efforts during this session, showcasing the Belmont High School values of respect, opportunity and resilience.
