Here at Chevalier, our Mathematics Department is not just about numbers and formulas; it's a vibrant space where we aim to make mathematics not only accessible but also enjoyable and memorable. We understand that fostering a love for learning is as crucial as imparting knowledge. Our approach goes beyond traditional boundaries, aiming to cultivate a dynamic learning environment that sparks curiosity and collaboration, and nurtures a deep appreciation for problem solving.
Throughout the year, the mathematics faculty has been plotting many things, to help ensure that we make maths a journey of joy, discovery, and lasting memories. Below have been some of the experiences that we have offered throughout the year!
In May this year, Chevalier sent its fiercest Year 12 mathematicians along with Mrs. Parsons to battle against mathematics enthusiasts from other schools in the ANU Extension 2 Mathematics Competition. The students included Risha B, James M, Annabel B, Sebastian C, Angus D, Larry D, Lachlan O, and Hanley S, all of whom put in a great effort and participated in the day. The students were placed into teams to solve a variety of mathematical problems throughout the day while competing against students in timed conditions.
It is with great pride that we acknowledge the victory of our Year 12 team, taking home the regional shield showcasing their mathematical prowess and dedication to problem solving.
Congratulations to all involved on their efforts!
Pi Shop continues to be a dynamic space for mathematical exploration and support. Held in the library every Wednesday and Thursday after school until 5pm, Pi Shop provides an inviting atmosphere for students to immerse themselves in mathematics. From tackling challenging problems to seeking assistance with coursework from Mrs. Parsons and Mr. Williams, Pi Shop is the go-to place. These sessions not only cater to the academic needs of our students but also encourage collaboration and camaraderie between peers.
We look forward to continuing to support students to achieve next year in all courses!
Our Year 8 students took on the challenge of the Senior Division of the APSMO Mathematics Olympiad with enthusiasm and determination. Through four rigorous tests, they exhibited commendable effort and problem-solving skills. As part of their preparation, students engaged in weekly practice sessions during Pi Shop, benefitting from the mentorship of both Kurtis A and Tilda P, who were a part of this year’s Extension 2 cohort. The Mathematics faculty extends a massive thank you to both Kurtis and Tilda for the work put in during these sessions, where they helped our Year 8’s to learn and develop strategies for tackling complex mathematical problems.
As the year comes to a close, we want to express our warmest wishes for a happy and safe holiday period in 2024. This year has been filled with mathematical marvels and the joy of learning, and we hope for this to continue in the upcoming year. May your holidays be a time of relaxation, joy, and mathematics with loved ones.
