INSTEP West for work experience

John XXIII College partners with INSTEP West to facilitate work experience opportunities for students wishing to complete ongoing work experience (one day per week as part of a Training Direct pathway) or longer block placements during senior school examination periods and/or holiday periods. Early Entry Guide from Study Work Grow

Study Work Grow has recently released an Early Entry Guide resource, defining early entry as opposed to alternate entry and giving details and further links according to each institution participating in early offers, in each state of Australia.

Early Offers for 2025 courses in WA

APPLYING FOR 2025 UNIVERSITY ADMISSION

University applications through TISC opened on Wednesday 1 May 2024. An updated list of important dates and deadlines is available on the TISC website.

Year 12 students applying to Curtin University, Edith Cowan University (except for WA Academy of Performing Arts courses), Murdoch University and The University of Western Australia must apply through TISC. Applicants for WAAPA courses should apply directly to ECU but complete a TISC application if they wish to be considered for other ECU courses, and applicants for The University of Notre Dame Australia can choose whether to apply directly to the university, or through TISC.

Applicants for Notre Dame’s Young Achievers Early Offer Program can apply directly to the university. Applicants who select an eligible Notre Dame degree as their first preference may also be considered for an early offer via TISC. Please note, the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Assured Pathway to Medicine) is not eligible for early entry, and all applications for this degree must be made via TISC.

EARLY OFFERS

Following the release of a report by the Federal Government, the five universities have agreed that early offers to Year 12 students for 2025 admissions will not be made until Monday 2 September 2024. Further rounds of early offers will be made on Tuesday 24 September, Monday14 October, Monday 18 November and Monday 2 December. Most early offers will be conditional, so students should carefully read their offer letter so that they know what is required. Students should also be aware that not all courses are available for early offers. Generally, courses with limited places, and university enabling programs do not make early offers, but for specific lists of courses excluded from early offers, check the university websites. Early offers will continue to be made based on final Year 11 results, as it is not feasible to use mid-year Year 12 results.

TISC GUIDE

The 2025 TISC Guide will be dispatched to schools in late July as usual. TISC recognises that an increasing number of Year 12 students now apply for university before they receive their TISC Guide. The print date cannot be brought forward due to internal university calendars and approvals required along with the lead times for producing a complete hard copy document.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS BROCHURES

The Admission Requirements for School Leavers for 2025 (2024 Year 12 students) and 2026 (2025 Year 12 students) are available from the TISC website. The requirements can be found under Undergraduate>Entry Requirements>School Leavers. The brochure for 2027 (2026 Year 12 students, to assist 2024 Year 10 students with subject selection) is expected to be available by the end of May.

UNIVERSITY ADVISORY SESSIONS

The Pathways and Transition team is organizing one-to-one university advisory sessions for Year 12 students. The advisory sessions are planned for Week 2 or 3 of Term 3. Participating universities include UWA, Curtin, and Notre Dame. Advisory sessions will take place at the College, during study periods or General classes (where possible.) Interested Year 12 students must fill out this Expression of Interest form. Mrs. Kelli Beaton will be in touch via email with students who have expressed their interest.

UNIQUE STUDENT IDENTIFIER (USI)

All students completing a TISC application will need a USI. Students can create a USI here. A form of identification, e.g. driver’s license or Medicare card, is required to create a USI. Students who suspect they already have a USI can re-locate their USI here.

Curtin Early Offers	If your predicted ATAR is five points above the ATAR score required for your selected course, you’ll receive an early offer that secures your place in semester 1, 2025. Your offer won’t be dependent on your final year 12 ATAR score. You’ll still need to complete WACE and meet the English and subject requirements for your course.   If your predicted ATAR is less than five points above the ATAR score required for your course, you’ll still receive an early offer for a place at Curtin. You’ll need to achieve a final ATAR that meets course entry requirements, and meet WACE, English and subjects’ requirements for the course. UWA Early Offers	Applicants must have a minimum predicted ATAR of 80 (Broadway ATAR of 78) and meet the entry requirements for their nominated course to receive an offer. Register for updates HERE. Key Contact Phone 131 UWA (131 892); 8.30am–5.00pm (AWST), Monday to Friday Book an appointment HERE.
Notre Dame Early Offers	When evaluating your eligibility, we consider your involvement in extracurricular activities, community service and other non-academic accomplishments. Early offers do not apply to Bachelor of Biomedical Science or the Bachelor of Advanced Biomedical Science pathway to the Doctor of Medicine programs. ECU Early Offers	If you're in Year 12 and have a predicted ATAR, or you're completing a Certificate IV or a recognised university enabling course that leads to undergraduate study, you can apply for an early offer for an ECU course. We'll use your most recent school results to calculate a predicted ATAR and if this meets the requirement for your nominated course, you'll receive a conditional early offer of a place. This will be subject to you achieving WACE and meeting the English requirements and any other prerequisites for your course (where relevant. If you're studying a Certificate IV or enabling course, or if your predicted ATAR doesn't quite meet the minimum entry requirements for your course, you'll still be eligible for an early offer that’s conditional on you meeting all entry requirements for your preferred course. That means achieving the required ATAR with your final results or completing your Certificate IV or enabling course. CURTIN UNIVERSITY UPDATES

New course Sem 1, 2025 Bachelor of Science (Midwifery)

This three-year (full-time) bachelor degree in midwifery prepares students for a rewarding career as a midwife. In this degree, students will gain the knowledge and skills to work in metropolitan and rural healthcare settings such as antenatal clinics, labour and birth suites, postnatal wards, special-care nurseries, breastfeeding clinics, midwifery group practice and birth centres. The current national shortage of midwives means there are excellent career opportunities across Australia.

Emerging Engineers Competition 2024

Hosted by UWA Girls+ in Engineering and OceanWorks, the 2024 Emerging Engineers Competition is now open. Designed for female students in Years 2 to 10, the competition is an open challenge in engineering that encompasses several specialisations, including civil, electrical and electronic, and environmental engineering. Students will be introduced to the engineering research and design process in a real-world context as they work towards an innovative design for a low-carbon footprint house to be powered in 2040. UWA+Starter micro-credentials are designed to meet secondary students' flexibility requirements, UWA+Starter micro-credentials focus on providing secondary students with the opportunity to study subjects online or in mixed mode with the school.

ECU School of Engineering

ECU School of Engineering is offering $20,000 scholarships to high performing Year 12 students who wish to study Engineering at ECU in 2025 and are on track to achieve an ATAR of 94 or above.

Nominations are now open. ECU are pleased to invite all secondary schools to nominate any high performing students who are interested in studying Engineering for these scholarships (let Ms. Hedley know if you wish the school to nominate you.) Alternatively, interested students can also self-nominate.

Construction Training Fund Scholarship 2025 Now Open

The CTF Scholarship program is designed for students who will be commencing years 11 and 12 in 2025. This fully funded program offers students the opportunity to work towards a Certificate II in Building and Construction while still attending school. Depending on their chosen pathway, selected students will attend an RTO one or two days a week for either one year or two years. Students will also have the chance to gain practical experience through on-site work.

Did you miss the recent Discover Monash Medicine session hosted by Monash? If so, watch the recording at Discover Monash: Medicine webinar to discover what was presented.

High School Medical Experience in Cambodia

Projects Abroad is running a new medical program in Cambodia. It will be a good mix of hospital time and community health, which will be a real immersive experience for the students, who will also gain a lot of cultural insight. Of particular interest is that this program will be running during the break at the end of term 3, starting on 22 September 2024, along with another date in December.

Curtin University (Medicine) - Casper Test Requirement

If you will be applying to Curtin University (Medicine) this year, apart from the UCAT, applicants will also need to register and complete the Casper Test, which is conducted by Acuity Insights.

Applicants will be ranked for the interview offer on the basis of their Casper score, UCAT score and ATAR.
All applicants (other than Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders) must complete the Casper Test.
School leavers and Curtin Course Switchers must sit the Undergraduate Casper Test. Non-school Leavers (Graduates) will have to sit the Postgraduate Casper Test.
Casper scores are valid only for the next available admissions year. Applicants should only complete the test in the year immediately preceding their planned year of admission. Applicants re-applying for the Medical Entry in a subsequent year must re-sit the Casper Test.
The Casper Test is held nationally and is sat online from home.
Applicants are responsible for making their own arrangements to register for the Casper Test.

The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) is an admissions test used by the UCAT ANZ Consortium of universities in Australia and New Zealand for their medical, dental, and clinical science degree programs. Universities requiring the UCAT are listed at this link - Universities requiring the UCAT but also listed below. Students intending to apply for courses requiring the UCAT at any of these universities are reminded that they will need to book a test.

Bookings will open on 5 March 2024 and close 17 May 2024. The testing dates will be from 1 July 2024 to 9 August 2024.

Students who are preparing for entry into any of these courses are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the format of the test at UCAT Test Format and the practice tests and preparation material provided at UCAT Preparation.

Getting into Medicine in WA

There is good reason to believe medical students are outstanding.

If you want to apply for medicine:

Take chemistry: Chemistry is a pre-requisite subject for medicine at most universities across Australia.

Entry to Medicine for 2025 (UCAT)

Only Curtin University in Western Australia takes students into medicine straight from school*. It was designed as a pathway for West Australian school leavers.

Candidates from rural and regional areas and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and those from disadvantaged backgrounds will be prioritised.

There were over 3000 applicants for the 120 places being offered at Curtin in 2024.

Applicants must have an ATAR of 95 or higher, including Chemistry, with a final score of 50 or higher. (See P4 of the Admission Guide for details.)
A competitive score on the Universal Clinical Aptitude Test. Bookings for the Test open 5 March. Testing begins 1 July.
Applicants then take the Casper Test which was introduced by Curtin last year.

Apprenticeship Support Australia is an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN), contracted deliver skills development advice and solutions to businesses and job-seekers across Australia. We offer employers holistic business-wide training advice and can assist in recommending suitable qualifications, advice on how to access Government funding for training, help with matching and recruitment of new staff, as well as ongoing coaching, mentoring and support of apprentices and trainees.

Australian Apprenticeships and Traineeships Information Service

The Australian Apprenticeships and Traineeships Information Service (AATIS) offers pathways information to students, job hunters, career advisers, and employers. The website, app, and resources are used by schools, parents, friends, and supporters to provide career planning and direction. AATIS is free to use and is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills, and Employment.

The Australian Apprenticeships Pathways website - AAPathways - is a hub providing in-depth information about Australian apprenticeships and traineeships, including information on in-demand occupations.

Students are encouraged to browse both the AAPathways website, as well as the AATIS website.

Year 9 and above - Construction Futures Try a Trade

Gain construction experience with CTF’s fully funded Try-A-Trade program. Participants get a taste of careers in the building industry and learn what to expect in various trades.

The Try-A-Trade program gives students in Year 9 and above, school leavers and mature-age job seekers, a chance to try various construction trades.

Notre Dame to deliver free Diploma of Nursing

Notre Dame is delivering a Diploma of Nursing in 2024 under the FREE VET courses offering being subsidised by the WA government.

Students can undertake the 18-month Diploma, which leads to work opportunities as an Enrolled Nurse.
Students may also choose to use their diploma to gain one year credit towards a Bachelor of Nursing.

There will be a resource fee; however, the course delivery will be subsidised.

The Focus on Mining Camps are five-day residential camps for high school students to experience what it’s like to study and work in the mining industry in WA. GAP Year Opportunities with CCUSA

CCUSA specialise in facilitating work placements at summer camps in the USA and Canada for young travellers. These opportunities are available during a gap year, before, during, or after university, college, or TAFE.

Many Australians find that a GAP year experience between high school and tertiary studies or after graduating university, before entering the workforce, is an effective way to acquire essential skills - communication, collaboration, and creativity. The Employment Buddy Program is a free program for young people with disability between the age of 15-24.

The program runs for 1 x day per week for 12 weeks.

Improving employment outcomes for people with disability

The Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre has released an Employment and Disability in Australia report which reveals increasing employment of people with a disability by 10 per cent could add $16 billion to economic output yearly.

The Report details the benefits of employing people with a disability, including addressing economic advantages, allowing individuals to find meaningful work, gain job satisfaction, autonomy and promote overall wellbeing.

Spotlight: Snapshot of The University of Melbourne (UoM) in 2024
