Sport at Calrossy
HRIS U15 Netball
The Calrossy U15 Netball team achieved their best-ever result at the HRIS tournament in Maitland, securing 5th place. The team’s impressive performance included wins against high-quality teams like Hunter Valley Grammar School, St. Philip's Christian College Newcastle, Avondale, and Heritage.
The dynamic defensive duo of Ruby Irwin and Charlotte Williams were standout performers, while Ava Harding and Mia Watson’s enthusiasm kept the team’s spirits high. Special mentions to Tayla Yeo and Sienna Swain, who stepped up in crucial positions against tough opposition.
The team’s five wins qualified them for the 5th/6th playoff, where they defeated St. Philip's Christian College - Port Stephens.
This achievement is a testament to the efforts of Netball Coordinator, Miss Warren, for her exceptional coaching and training, and to student-coach/umpire Camilla Teague for her contributions. Thanks also to Mrs. Aitken and Mrs. Harding for their support.
Congratulations to the team and their outstanding efforts!

HRIS U15 Soccer
The Calrossy U15 Boys Football team experienced mixed success at the HRIS Football Gala Day in Maitland. In challenging conditions, the boys drew 1-1 with St. Philip’s Christian College in their first match, thanks to a goal from Hudson Clunas. However, the second half saw two goals scored against them, resulting in a loss.
In the second game, Calrossy claimed a 1-0 victory over Scone Grammar with another goal from Clunas. The third match against a dominant St. Philip’s Newcastle side saw a quick 3-goal deficit in the first half, but Calrossy’s grit kept the final score at 3-0. After an unfortunate bye, the team faced St. Philip’s Port Stephens in their final game, narrowly losing by a single goal despite a fantastic performance from keeper Brock Moxon, who saved a penalty.
A special thanks to Mr. Gatenby for his coaching and support throughout the tournament.
Rugby Results
Round 5 of the North West Regional Youth Rugby Competition took place in three different locations last week with the Boys 14s, 16s, and First XV all travelling to Barraba to play against Moree, the 16s Girls to Scone to play Scone, and the 14s Girls were in Tamworth to play Gunnedah and Pirates.
U14s Boys Match Report:
The U14s Boys faced Moree and ended with a 38-19 loss. Despite the result, several players delivered standout performances.
Ben Shaw had a tough defensive game and consistently ran the ball with determination. Ethan Walker played well and contributed a try, while Zac Bailey also scored and put in a solid defensive effort. Elliot Quinn successfully converted two tries to round out the scoring.
U16s Boys Match Report:
The U16s Boys lost 33-12 but displayed commendable effort, showing more control and fluency in both defence and attack. However, lapses in concentration on either side of halftime proved detrimental.
Preparation was significantly improved compared to last week, with the players being more focused and alert. The lineout was notably stronger, and the practice of their new driving maul showed promising results. The forwards can be proud of their efforts, which will undoubtedly yield points in future matches.
The game was evenly matched for the first 25 minutes, with both teams trading tries, resulting in a 12-12 scoreline. A notable highlight was Cooper Wilson's impressive sideline run, culminating in a try near the corner, which was successfully converted by Harrison Hamilton. Hamilton also scored the second try following sustained pressure and quick thinking.
Unfortunately, just before halftime, Moree capitalised on the team's failure to disrupt their offloading, scoring two tries within two minutes. This sequence of play proved decisive and was a setback from which the team could not recover. Moree's constant offloading and ability to maintain possession were tactics the team struggled to counter. Their defensive line, although frequently close to offside, was robust and the team was unable to penetrate it despite multiple attempts.
Luke Osland was named Man of the Match for his consistent performance at the lineout, including winning against the throw. Overall, it was a commendable effort from all players in challenging conditions. The key takeaway is the need to recognise and address issues during the game, particularly improving tracking effort to avoid committing too early and executing plays more effectively.
U18s Boys Match Report:
The U18s Boys showcased their form with an impressive performance, securing a 22-10 victory. Jamie Grant led the team with two tries, demonstrating his exceptional speed and movement with the ball in hand. Archie Eather was again devastating in defence and contributed a crucial try, while Ben Kelly scored twice, consolidating the team's lead. Harry Russ also made significant contributions with strong defensive plays and a try to round out the scoring.
U16 Girls Match Report:
The U16 Girls travelled all the way to Scone to take on a strong Scone outfit. They played two hard-fought matches but ultimately came up short. They narrowly missed victory in the first game, 20-19, and then went down 22-10 in the second game. Claire Dowe was outstanding, scoring two tries and converting both in the first match, and adding another try in the second. Kayla Hystec also made a significant impact with a try in the first match.
U14 Girls Match Report:
The U14 Girls were in Tamworth in wet conditions on Plain St Fields. The girls faced tough competition, losing both of their matches. They were defeated 22-0 in the first match and narrowly lost 14-10 in the second. Despite the losses, Summer Barnett-Tapp and Holly McIlveen both managed to score tries, demonstrating the determination the 14s girls are known for.
Firsts Basketball Shines at HRIS Gala
Calrossy’s Firsts Basketball team delivered an exceptional performance, securing 5th place at the HRIS Basketball Gala in Newcastle.
The team opened with a dominant win over St. Philip’s Christian College, 31-20. Charley Pickens was lethal from beyond the arc, hitting three consecutive 3-pointers, while Harrison Barton dominated the middle. The second pool match against Central Coast Sports College was a tighter affair, with Calrossy adjusting well in the second half but ultimately falling 21-13.
In a must-win final pool match to advance to the quarterfinals, Calrossy showed sharp early play. Pat Schaffer’s defensive hustle, coupled with Harrison Barton’s unstoppable presence in the middle and Harrison Hamilton’s precision, led to a 23-14 victory. In the quarterfinals against Central Coast Adventist School, Calrossy went basket for basket with the favourites but eventually fell short, despite strong efforts from Luke Jones, Blake Kelly, and Wilson O’Rourke.
In the next playoff against Macquarie College, early contributions from Luke Jones and Wilson O’Rourke, along with Bryn Heywood’s defensive intensity, kept the game close. With 30 seconds left, Charley Pickens hit a clutch contested 3-pointer to secure the lead. Harrison Barton’s smart defensive play ensured the win, propelling Calrossy into the 5th/6th playoff.
In the final game against Lakes Grammar, Calrossy emerged hungrier, with Barton and Heywood making significant impacts. Despite a comeback attempt from Lakes Grammar, Pickens delivered another clutch 3-pointer to secure a 5th place finish.
