Plain English Speaking Award

Congratulations to Aaditya Thakur of Year 11 for gaining the wild card ticket (runner up) at the Plain English Speaking Award held in the auditorium this morning. And commiserations to Adiba Khan of Year 10 who came in a close 3rd. It was a very tight contest. Aaditya and Adiba gave wonderful impassioned speeches, really impressing the adjudicators. Aaditya now has the chance of speaking in the final if a 1st place speaker pulls out. So watch this space. Many thanks also to Meet Shah our superlative time keeper and last but not least Alayna Guha who shepherded the students and teachers to all the right areas.

In the cold morning air on Tuesday 18th of June,  the intermediate boys badminton team geared up and prepared to face the extremely anticipated district badminton competition held at Eagle Stadium. With a total of six members consisting of me, Arlo, Andy, Sachiv, Rishit and Yeemish, we prepared to go out and destroy any opposition we faced, despite the freezing conditions.

To begin with, we were informed that we were starting off in Pool A, playing against Manor Lakes, Wyndham Central, and Good News Lutherian, who were all pretty easy targets. Whilst steamrolling through Pool A’s competition, our team noticed on the scoreboard that Werribee SC was doing the same to their pool, running through their competition much like ours. After all the rounds were played, we found out that our most difficult adversary yet would soon be here to face us in the finals, and all of our team prepared to challenge what seemed impossible to overcome; Werribee SC. The endgame started, and quickly after the opening we realised it wasn’t going to be easy. As I wrapped up my game with a comparably easy win, our team rapidly faltered during our singles, turning our first singles rounds against Werribee SC into a 3-1 disaster.

However, there was still a light at the end of the tunnel, slim as it may be. If we could manage to win our doubles games by a margin, the competition would definitely still be winnable, as it would come down to the individual points scored during the games. For our most crucial doubles pairing yet, we went with me and Andy (1 and 3), and Arlo and Sachiv (2 and 4), and I soon found out this pairing was exactly what our team needed.

During doubles we absolutely steamrollered the opposition, and after all was said and done, we came out with a narrow 7 point lead against Werribee SC, securing our spot in the WMR competition coming up later in July. I really enjoyed being able to play badminton in such a competitive environment, and I hope our team can continue to work together to win the WMR as well.

Intermediate Girls and Boys WMR Tennis

On the 16th of May, the Intermediate Girls and Boys Tennis Teams played at the Western Metropolitan Regional Competition in Geelong.

Both teams won against their pool in the round robin tournament, against schools such as Belmont, Geelong and Footscray, which meant that we were able to play in the finals! Unfortunately, the sports schools Bayside and Maribyrnong were too strong and both teams lost the finals. Both teams ended up coming runners up in the competition overall.

We want to extend a huge thank you to Ms Guastella and Mr Wright for supporting us at the competition and making this day a success, and to our teammates who played wonderfully on the day! Everyone had lots of fun and put in their best effort!

Senior Girls WMR Tennis

As 2024 is the final year of high school for many of us, this is the time to step outside our comfort zone - whether it’s aiming for a leadership position, joining a new club, or representing the school for sport, we’re all starting to appreciate these events and the cherished moments that accompany it.

For the past four years, playing tennis has given me some of the best memories from my time here at Suzanne, whether it's spending the day catching up with friends I don’t see around, or the thrill of the competition. From the shared experiences of lunchtime training, celebrating victories (especially getting to regionals!), and becoming more resilient after our losses, it’s clear just how significant extracurriculars like these are, to let us slow down during VCE and take a break. And of course, it wouldn’t be the same without our wonderful teacher Ms. Guastella who supported all of us each year, making this last year for the year 12s a truly special end.

Looking ahead, I hope other students embrace the opportunity to participate in interschool sports. Whether you're an experienced player or just starting out, these opportunities are about more than just winning, but about sharing experiences which you’ll remember well beyond high school.

Intermediate Girls Soccer

On the 4th of June, the intermediate girls soccer team participated in the inter school girls soccer competition.

With amazing teamwork, the girls won all three of their group stage matches. They made it to the finals, playing a great game losing only 0-1.

I got the chance to coach the team with the support of Mr Haslinger and I couldn’t be prouder of them for doing so well and being such supportive teammates. A lot of the girls on the team have never played soccer before so for them to do so well was amazing to see.

Congratulations to all the players on the team.

Senior Girls and Boys Basketball

On Friday 21st of June, both our senior girls and senior boys participated in the interschool basketball competition against schools like Good News, Tarneit Senior, The Grange and Werribee Secondary to name a few.

The boys won their first game by 8 points but sadly lost the following two games they played. The girls lost their first game and won the following two games.

I worked alongside Mr Haslinger and Mr Bourke to choose and train the teams and I couldn’t be prouder of the effort everyone put in. Everyone did the best they could and seeing the teamwork and the sportsmanship on the day was truly inspiring.

Congratulations to everyone on the team !!

Western Metropolitan Region Cross Country

On the 20th of June, a group of students were selected to compete and represent the school in the Western Metropolitan Region Cross Country, following the results of the recent division level competition.

The weather on the day was an improvement from last year, and all our runners put up a great effort despite the steep hilly terrain. Personally, it was a struggle getting up the middle hill; serving as a reminder of the importance of incline training.

Overall the Suzanne Cory team’s efforts were commendable, with some students successfully securing spots for state.
