Senior School News

Welcome to another exciting week at Sacred Heart! It was so special to see so many grandparents on our special Grandparents day today. You are very special to our students and it really made their day spending some time with you in our classrooms.

Our students continue to thrive, participating in a variety of engaging activities and making significant progress in their learning. Here’s a detailed look at what our Grade 5 and Grade 6 students have been up to.

Congratulations to Grade 5! We are thrilled to announce that our Grade 5 students have smoothly transitioned to their new location in the old library. Their adaptability and enthusiasm are commendable. Our Grade 6 students are now well and truly settled into their space in 6M’s classroom, having prepared for this transition for a few weeks. They often did lessons together, which has made the move seamless for everyone involved.

Lightning Premierships Our students have been showing their sporting prowess in the Lightning Premierships:

  • Netball: Congratulations to our netball team for securing 3rd place.
  • Soccer (Boys): A fantastic effort from our boys' soccer team, who achieved 1st place.

Next week, we will have the Football Girls Lightning Premiership on Thursday and the regular Lightning Premiership on Friday. We look forward to cheering on our students as they continue to excel in their sporting endeavours.

Engaging English

Grade 6: Our Grade 6 students continue to delve into persuasive writing, focusing on the important issue of child labour. They are also deeply engaged in reading "Rivet Boy" and continue their Spelling Mastery program, which has seen some room changes due to our ongoing building project.

Grade 5: The Grade 5s are captivated by the ongoing reading of "War Horse," complemented by various comprehension activities. They are also developing their narrative writing skills.

Topic Exploration

Both grades have begun an electrifying new topic on energy. They are exploring different types of energy and how energy can be converted. This hands-on topic promises to be both educational and exciting as students engage in experiments and activities

Extracurricular Activities:

Well done to our group of grade 6 students who have taken it upon themselves to lead our new 'quiet club'. They are doing an excellent job facilitating the activities during lunch time. A reminder, the time has shifted from the 2nd half of lunch to the 1st half of lunch. Hope to see you there!

Girls Soccer Lightning Premiership

It was an early morning with all the students participating in soccer arriving at school at 8:30 am. We hopped on a bus to Sir Zelman Cowen Reserve, ready for a fun-filled day of soccer.

The Girls team started off strong by playing St Joseph's Malvern, where we won 6-0, getting us off to a great start. Then we played Galilee and drew 0-0, but we played well as a team and had lots of opportunities. We had a bye next and continued afterward, playing St Finbars, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Finally, we played our last scheduled game against St Pats and drew 0-0 once again. We placed 2nd on the normal ladder and went to the Semi-finals, where we ended up playing St Pats again and lost 1-0.

Overall, it was a great experience. We had an amazing time playing and enjoyed watching the boys play their grand final.

Boys Soccer Lightning Premiership

For the boys, we started our first cold game against De La Salle. The scores were 1-all, and we almost won. It was on one of the smallest pitches.

After that, our second game was against St Mary's Hampton. We played on another small pitch and won 3-1 with a few amazing goals from us to secure the win.

Then we moved across the ovals and played against St Joan of Arc. We had an amazing win again, 5-0, showing that we have what it takes to compete in the finals.

Then it was lunch. We went to meet up with the girls and see how they were going, and it was announced that both the boys and the girls were in the finals.

FINALS

The boys had a very good morning at the soccer Lightning Premiership, finishing 2nd overall. That meant they would play 3rd placed St Mary’s Hampton in the Semi-Final. In that game, we went on to beat St Mary’s Hampton 4-1, advancing to the grand final.

THE GRAND FINAL The grand final was against Galilee. They started strong, taking a corner to make it 1-0. We quickly responded with Vinnie scoring a goal to equalise at 1-1.

It was tied at 1-1, setting the stage for a last-half classic. We had a very good last half, with Fergus scoring to put us in the lead for the first time in the game at 2-1.

Then, the worst thing happened. They had a free kick after the siren had gone, from one of the hardest angles possible. The Galilee player stepped up to take the free kick. It was heading for the top corner. Our goalie couldn't get it, but Finn jumped up and used his hands to save it. It was a penalty to send it to overtime. The best player on their team stood up to take the penalty. He kicked it, but it went over the crossbar. And that's how we won the soccer Lightning Premiership for the first time in Sacred Heart history!!

Girls A Netball Lightning Premierships

With an early morning wake-up, all students and teachers heading to the netball Lightning Premierships had an early start, leaving at 8:30. It was a very cold day to play netball, with rain pouring down as our first game started.

The Girls A team began the day with a win against Galilee, with the final score being 5-2. Everyone played their hardest, even though our hands were numb. Our next game was against St Finbars, where we had our first draw, 7-7.

Finally, we had a break with our first and last bye. Next up was the game we had been waiting for against St Joan of Arc. We knew we didn't have the best chance of winning, but we still tried even harder. Unfortunately, that game led to a loss, with the score being 12-3. But this made us even more determined to win.

Then came the game that counted the most, the one that would determine our place in the finals. This was a tough match against St Patrick. It was a tense match, but sadly, the final outcome was another loss.
