Student Leader Online Workshop

On Monday our Student Leaders participated in a Meaning Making Workshop, hosted by Chief Executive of the Department of Education, Professor Martin Westwell.

Our Student Leaders met with the students from Angaston Primary School who facilitated group discussions and activities which enabled our leaders to explore the concepts of Learning Mode and Performance Mode. During Learning Mode, we are trying to grasp a new skill, or make sense of a new learning. In this space we are likely to make mistakes, and are faced with challenges. We have to enact our Growth Mindset and listen to feedback. During Performance Mode, we are showcasing our ability of that skill to others.

Our students identified many areas where they might fit into one of these modes and then move into the other. One of the examples was learning a new song for choir (Learning Mode) and then participating in the Festival of Music (Performance Mode).

The students worked collaboratively to unpack this concept, and began to look at our 2025 focus area of Wellbeing through the lens of Learning and Performance modes. The Student Leaders took on the goal of “actively contributing to a positive community culture". They are planning to interview their peers, and investigate what is working well and where they can make changes to improve student connection and belonging.

📱🔒 Are you having trouble getting your child or teen off their phone?

Social media algorithms aim to keep users scrolling through their content for as long as possible. Although algorithms aren’t always problematic, the tactics they use to keep users engaged can result in them amplifying sensationalist, extreme or harmful content like:

💄 unrealistic beauty standards

🔫 violent material

🤬 hate speech.

Teens can be particularly vulnerable to this type of content.

Prolonged exposure can lead to social media dependency and distorted expectations about life, relationships and success.
