Religious Education

Year 7
Toward the end of term one Year 7 studied the Easter Story. Students learnt about Holy Week and the traditions that surround Easter. These terms students are exploring the life and times of Jesus. Students are developing an understanding about what life was like for Jewish people during the time of Jesus. Investigating the land, the way people lived, their religion, and important events in history. Students will also learn about who Jesus was and what he came to earth to do, by reading stories from the Bible.
Year 8
Students recently demonstrated their understanding of the Catholic value of "forgiveness" by creating a children's story themed around this teaching. Students did a fabulous job writing, designing and creating their forgiveness stories. Student’s studied Pope Francis’ message about forgiveness. This term students are exploring how God can be experienced in different ways including through relationship with others, nature, art, architecture and community. Students will consider the concept of God and who he is, take a look at what God said about himself to the prophets and what God reveals about himself through scripture.
Year 9
During term 3 students are learning about Jesus and how his representation in art has changed throughout time. Students will learn how to interpret Christian art, media and prayers. New knowledge and understanding will assist students in creating their own artworks that will highlight the characteristics of Jesus and his teachings. Each artwork will be informed by a specific scripture passage about Jesus.
Year 10
Throughout this term students will learn about Mary and her significant contribution to the Christian story. Students will participate in Marian devotion and prayer. Mary’s significant role, the mother of Jesus, her vocation and response to God’s call will be examined.
Students will explore the process of canonising Saints, and research the life of a Saint. Using this insight, students will make connections with issues and people in our world who are inspired by the Saint's values and message.
Year 11 Studies in Catholic Thought
This term students are exploring the nature of the Trinitarian God and the nature of Jesus as being both human and divine. Students will begin to develop an understanding of the concept of the human person as being built for relationships and community in order for human flourishing.
Year 11 Studies of Religion 1 and 2
Students are currently undertaking studies in Religious traditions. This includes developing an understanding of the origin of the religion as well as the historical and cultural context in which the religion developed.
The SoR 1 class are exploring Islam. The key events of Prophet Muhammad's life have been researched as well as the emergence of the Sunni and Shi’a branches of Islam.
The SoR 2 class have completed their first religious traditions study on Judaism and are moving on to Christianity. Beliefs, principles and core ethical teachings are being investigated. The development of Early Christian Communities and variants in Christianity will be researched.
Year 12 Studies in Catholic Thought
Students are learning about ethical principles and the sources guide Catholics moral decision making and behaviour. The context in which these guides were developed are also being researched. Students will consider how Catholic ethical teaching can apply to the context of their own lives. Several people who have lived lives of service and self-sacrifice will be researched. Within the Church individuals and groups who live a life of faith will be discovered.
Year 12 Studies of Religion
Students in the Year 12 SoR courses also undertaking studies in Religious traditions. The students in the Sor 1 course are developing a deeper understanding of significant figures in Christianity, researching their contributions and impact.
Sor 2 students are completing their in-depth study on Islam exploring ethics and ceremonies within the tradition. Shortly students will explore the principal teaching of peace in the context of Christianity and Islam informed by each religion's sacred text.
