Graeme Wood Shield Grand Final Report
Mazenod 5/92 defeated Chisholm 7/91
After a brilliant semi-final performance against reigning champions Newman College, Mazenod travelled to the WACA to compete in their third consecutive Graeme Wood Shield Final.
Mazenod won the toss and elected to bowl first on a fast WACA track. Fynn T (0/14 from 4) and Will H (0/22 from 3) opened the bowling and restricted Chisholm to 23 runs from the six-over powerplay. Captain Mitchell G (0/8 from 4) and Sam A (2/15 from 4) then entered the attack and also proved difficult to score from. At the halfway mark of their innings, Chisholm had only managed 30 runs from 10 overs.
Mazenod’s fielding was excellent, with stand-in keeper Hamish S also playing an important role in preventing easy runs on the fast outfield. Chisholm needed to accelerate and did so to an extent, until Luca C came into the attack and took an impressive 3/20 from his four overs to close out the innings. Chisholm finished on 7/91.
Mazenod were pleased to be in a strong position at the break, but there was still plenty of work to be done. Ashton S, who had dominated throughout the tournament, struck his first ball cleanly, only for it to incredibly bounce off the head of a fielder and be caught by another, in a moment that shocked all in attendance.
The top order was challenged, with the pink ball flying through to the keeper under lights with prodigious swing and seam movement. Mazenod struggled for early fluency and fell to 4/22 in the sixth over, with all four wickets going to the same bowler. The first ball after drinks left Mazenod in further trouble at 5/49.
Hamish S was at the crease and looking composed, despite wickets falling around him. He was joined by Lachlan F, with Mazenod still needing 43 runs to win. The two classy left-handers remained calm under pressure, running hard between the wickets and putting the bad balls to the boundary.
While the crowd was tense, the boys stayed composed and reached the target with two overs to spare. Hamish finished on an outstanding 50 not out, with Lachlan unbeaten on 13. The Mazenod boys rushed the field to celebrate a memorable victory.
Coaches Angelo Vallis and Michael Ellul were incredibly proud of the whole squad and the contributions made throughout the campaign. The boys were the standout team of the tournament, going undefeated and proving themselves very deserving winners of the Graeme Wood Shield. Hamish S was named MVP of the final.

Hockey Players Needed!
We are on the look out for players for our 3 Hockey teams for the upcoming season. We currently require additional players for our 7/8's and 11/12's cohorts to ensure we are able to field teams. No prior experience necessary!
Since 2024, Mazenod have formally been affiliated with Curtin University Hockey Club (CUHC - https://cuhc.org.au/), with teams from 7/8, 9/10 and 11/12's playing under CUHC, in Mazenod Sports uniform. This affiliation provides our boys with access to quality coaching, access to state of the art Hockey facilities at Perth Hockey Stadium and heavily discounted hockey fees (over half of those at other clubs training on synthetic pitches).
Our teams play in the Hockey WA Junior Competitions, with games typically played at Turf pitches around the metro area.
Season Timing:
The home and away season runs from 1st of May through to the first week of September.
Game Times:
7/8's Play Saturday mornings
9/10's Play Sunday mornings
11/12's Play Friday evenings
Training Times:
7/8's Train 4-5PM, Friday afternoons at Perth Hockey Stadium
9/10's Train 4-5PM, Friday afternoons at Perth Hockey Stadium
11/12's Train 4:30-5:30PM, Thursday afternoons at Perth Hockey Stadium
Coaches:
Our affiliation with CUHC means that we are able to source skilled coaches from their Senior club players, but if you are knowledgeable, we welcome volunteers to assist with managing and umpiring. This year our coaches are a mixture of State representatives, old boys and former college PE Teachers:
7/8's - Lauren Blair
9/10's - Butch Worth
11/12's - Jayden Hart, Mazenod Old boy
Registrations:
Season 2026 Registration fees are $221.27 for 7/8's and 9/10's and $274.82 for 11/12's, inclusive of the Hockey Australia Levy:
