Heads of Secondary Years' Report

Dear Students, Parents, Carers and Friends of Hazel Glen College,

As we move into the final weeks of Term 2, there continues to be a great deal of activity across the Secondary Years. Students have been working hard in their classes, engaging in important conversations as a community, and preparing for key assessment milestones as the semester draws to a close.

Recently, we acknowledged National Reconciliation Week as a College community. National Reconciliation Week provides an important opportunity for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, while considering how we can each contribute to reconciliation in meaningful ways. Earlier this term, our Secondary Years students came together for an assembly focused on the theme of reconciliation and the role we all play in creating a more inclusive and respectful future.

Following the assembly, students participated in discussions within their Homegroups, reflecting on what reconciliation means to them and identifying actions they could take to contribute positively to their communities. It has been wonderful to see these commitments displayed on the windows of the Performing Arts Centre, creating a visible reminder of the thoughtful reflections and aspirations of our students.

As a College, we continue to focus on building a positive, connected and joyful culture for both students and staff. Many students may have noticed our staff participating in a range of fun dress-up themes each fortnight as part of the Fish! Philosophy approach that is becoming increasingly embedded across the College. This initiative encourages us to bring energy, positivity and enjoyment to our work while strengthening relationships with one another. Recently, staff embraced a "Spots and Stripes" theme, and today, many staff members have come dressed as another colleague from around the College. These light-hearted opportunities create moments of connection and laughter across the College, and we hope they bring a little extra excitement to the school day while continuing to foster a strong sense of belonging and community for all.

Last week, many of our talented students involved in the College production attended Production Camp as they continued preparations for this year's performance of Beauty and the Beast. Production Camp is always a valuable opportunity for students to come together, develop their performance skills, strengthen relationships and immerse themselves in the creative process. We are incredibly grateful to the staff who supported the camp and look forward to seeing the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm of our students come to life on stage later in the year.

This week also marked the commencement of our Semester 1 examination period, with our Year 11 students beginning on Tuesday with their English examination. Exams provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their learning, consolidate their understanding of key concepts and develop important skills such as organisation, preparation and time management. While examinations can sometimes feel challenging, they are also valuable learning experiences that help students build confidence, resilience and independence.

We would like to also extend our congratulations to our Year 9 Cohort and Staff for another outstanding 'Personal Best' evening on Thursday, where our students showcased their passion projects to the community and loved ones. We are certainly very proud of their efforts.

As students continue through the examination period, we encourage them to maintain healthy routines, including getting adequate sleep, staying organised, taking regular breaks from study and seeking support from their teachers when needed. Preparing consistently, rather than cramming at the last minute, is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress and maximise success. We wish all students the very best as they continue their assessments over the coming weeks.

Across all year levels, students have also been busy completing and submitting final assessment tasks as teachers work towards finalising Semester 1 reports. This is always a significant time of year, providing an opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and reflect on the progress they have made throughout the semester. We thank our students for their efforts and commitment and acknowledge the support provided by families throughout this busy period.

Semester Reports will be shared with families at the end of the term and will provide valuable feedback on student achievement, growth and engagement in learning.

Thank you to our students, staff and families for your continued support throughout what has been a productive and rewarding term. The coming weeks remain busy, but they also provide an opportunity to celebrate the achievements, growth and learning that have taken place throughout Semester 1. We look forward to finishing the term strongly and wish everyone all the best for the weeks ahead.

Warm regards,
