JLA

Our JLA mathematicians have been busy exploring the world of subtraction and measurement!
Students have been developing their understanding of measurement. They have been using informal and formal units to measure length, exploring how to accurately measure objects around the classroom, and comparing and ordering items based on their size. Through hands-on activities, students have practiced using rulers and other measuring tools and have discussed the importance of choosing appropriate units when measuring different objects.
One of the exciting things about our maths learning this term is that all three classes have been working together. Students have been mixed into different groups, giving them the opportunity to learn alongside children from other classes and work with different teachers.
This collaborative approach has many benefits. Students build confidence by meeting new friends, develop their communication skills by explaining their thinking to others, and are exposed to a variety of teaching styles and problem-solving strategies. Learning with a wider group helps students become flexible thinkers and encourages them to support and learn from one another.
During our subtraction unit, students have been:
- Playing fun subtraction games
- Practising counting back strategies
- Learning different ways to solve subtraction problems
- Working together to explain and compare their thinking
- Building confidence and fluency with numbers
The classrooms have been buzzing with mathematical conversations as students challenge themselves and celebrate their successes. We are so proud of the enthusiasm, teamwork, and persistence they have shown while becoming subtraction experts!
