Rights, Responsibilities and Our Community Helpers
Our Prep students have been exploring rights and responsibilities as part of their learning this term. They have learned that when our rights are respected, everyone can be safe and happy.
As part of this unit, we have been focusing on the responsibilities of people who help us in our community and the important roles they play. We were very lucky to welcome several special visitors who have shared their knowledge and experiences with our students.
We began with a visit from St. John’s Ambulance, where students learned about basic first aid and how to respond in an emergency. They were fascinated to hear how they can help people who are injured or unwell, and they even had the opportunity to practise simple techniques such as checking if someone is okay and knowing how to get help from an adult.
Our next visitors were Loretta and Steve, our community Police Officers, who spoke with the students about keeping safe and the important job police officers do in helping our community. The children asked thoughtful questions and learned about how police protect people and support those in need. They then got an opportunity to wear some police uniform, sit in the police cars and hear the sirens.
We also had a visit from Karimi, our crossing supervisor, who explained how she helps keep everyone safe when crossing the road. Students discussed the importance of road safety and how they can take responsibility by following instructions, stopping, looking and listening carefully.
These visits have helped our students make meaningful connections between their learning and the real world. They are beginning to understand that while we all have rights, such as the right to feel safe, we also have responsibilities, like following rules and looking out for others.
We are so proud of the curiosity and respect our Prep students have shown throughout this learning experience. We look forward to continuing to build their understanding of how they can be active, responsible members of our community. We are looking forward to our upcoming visit with our local Fire fighters.
