Koorie Club

This year we have formed a Koorie Club for our indigenous students, Layla Anderson, Aurora Gould, Elle-May Kaur – Nanrah and Mia Kaur – Nanrah.
The club is held once a week, for one hour during class time and provides a safe cultural space for our students to yarn and develop a strong sense of self and identity through activities such as cooking, textile crafts, gardening, art and in term 3, we are hoping for an opportunity to dance in P.E.
So far, the girls have made damper using cinnamon myrtle and chocolate muffins that included Kakadu plum jam. Together they made a head band using the Mina Mina Dreaming fabric which has the artwork of a Balarinji indigenous artist. It features a women’s journey and connection to the land.
Elle-May, Aurora, Laylah and Mia have also been keeping a journal of their yarns and are using the artwork from the Strong Spirit colouring books series. It features artwork from Bayley Mifsud, whose Aboriginal name is Merindah-Gunya, a proud Peek Whurrong woman of the Maar nation, from southwest Victoria (Warrnambool).
