 Prep

We have been busy in Prep working with clay. Students learn the basics about clay; where it comes from, what it is used for, the process it goes through. We then pracitsed using playdough. Students were able to learn some basic clay vocabulary while they played with the playdough. They learnt wedge, slab, coil and pinch pot. Then students were encouraged to play with the dough and create whatever they wanted.

The following week, students were ready to make their pinch pot. We always start with a pinch pot in Prep. The children want to create whatever they want, and normally the teacher's are on board for this, however there are things you must learn about clay first. The pinch pot is the perfect place to start. They were encouraged to create whatever they wished with their pinch pot, and the diversity in creations did not disappoint.

Grade 1/2

We have been busy making...

Puppets are so deeply loved by children. They bring out a different side in the child. It is always a joy to watch a child with a puppet and these sock puppets do not disappoint. Each child was given a sock. They could colour their sock with markers and dyes. They then created a mouth piece and attached it independently. 

The final task was to create the character. The students added hair, eyes, mouths, tongues, hats, eyebrows, props, hands, moustaches, wings, skirts, you name it! You could hear children squealing with excitement as their character started to come to life. Classes will finish with a puppet show! We hope you love meeting your child's puppet in the coming weeks.

Grade 3/4

The Grade 3/4s have blown us away over the past few weeks with their Australian Native still life drawings. The Grade 3/4 students have been learning about the work of Dr Deanne Gilson.

We focused primarily on the works from Before Joseph Banks, Our Baskets and Plants Held Sacred Knowledge, 2022.

Students watched a short documentary where she spoke about the importance of going on mindful walks and finding things that you believe are beautiful and inspiring. Together we walked around the school, taking our time, enjoying the moment and carefully looking for one thing that we thought was beautiful. Some chose giant rocks, others delicate flowers, but all returned with something that resonated with them.

The students brought their objects back to the room and attempted to draw them exactly as they saw them. Here we practised observational drawing techniques.

The following week, we carefully studied the work of Dr Deanne Gilson. We noticed the composition in her work and the way she used colour. Also, the importance of the basket. Children were asked to choose a photograph of an Australian native to draw. They were encouraged to draw them in baskets, as the basket is being honored as the object that has been used to hold sacred knowledge for tens of thousands of years.

The students created such beautiful work. Each piece was as unique and special as the next. The children should be incredibly proud of what they have produced in this unit. 

Our Clay Houses

As part of our miniature unit, students were asked to design a house for a miniature character that they had created. There were limited constraints around what consitituted a house, if they were happy to justify that this was their character's home, we were happy to encourage them to make it.

Here are only one quarter of the amazing houses made by the 3/4 students. All so different and unique.
