CLASSROOM NEWS!

Prep/1 Classroom News

Another exciting fortnight, learning and developing our skills in the Prep/1 classroom!

It is hard to believe we are already in June and getting ready to send home Semester 1 school reports.

The students have been working really hard this term in all subject areas, but particularly in their literacy lessons, to develop their reading, writing and spelling skills. Each week we share in their excitement as they meet their new Initialit 'sound' friends or learn a new digraph. This term has seen our Grade 1 students produce an information text from scratch and our Prep students begin to independently write sentences using their knowledge of the sounds they have learnt to spell words. We are very excited to share some of these wonderful work samples with you in their learning journals this term.

In Mathematics, Prep and Grade 1 students have been exploring measurement, number and place value concepts through a range of hands-on activities. Students compared and ordered objects based on length, investigated capacity by identifying which containers hold more or less, and explored halves and quarters using practical materials. They also developed their understanding of number bonds by partitioning numbers into different parts and creating number bond chains. More recently, students have been learning about teen numbers, discovering that these numbers are made from one group of ten and some extra ones. Through the use of ten frames, counters, MAB blocks and number games, students have continued to build confidence in counting, representing and describing numbers.

In Digital Technologies, students have been learning how digital systems can help people solve problems and record information. Through a mock library borrowing activity, students explored how technology can be used to keep track of books and manage information efficiently. They also participated in a lost property investigation, using photographs and digital tools to help identify and return missing items. These activities encouraged students to think about how devices and digital systems support everyday tasks at school and in the wider community while developing their ability to identify different technologies and explain their purpose.

In Physical Education, students have been developing their kicking, passing and ball control skills through a variety of soccer activities and games. They practised using different parts of their feet to control and pass the ball while learning how to move safely in space and work cooperatively with others. Students also enjoyed learning about the FIFA World Cup and Australia's Socceroos, discussing what it means to represent your country in sport. Throughout these lessons, students demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, teamwork and enthusiasm while building their confidence and fundamental movement skills.

The photos below capture students actively participating in Numeracy investigations and our Human Bee-Bots lesson, where they developed problem-solving, sequencing and teamwork skills.

Team 2/3

Gosh! Hasn't the last fortnight flown! We have almost completed our assessments and our students continue to show positive growth -YAY!

In Maths, we have been continuing our work on Fractions and beginning to find out all about Time. In particular we have begun focusing on how minutes and hours are related to each other and learning to read analogue time. Do your children know how minutes make up an hour? Seeing this in practice in the real world can help them see the value in learning these concepts.  For example: reading the time and working out how long before they leave for school or sports training, knowing how to read the clock to know when their ten minutes on the screen is up!

In Literacy, we continue to learn about inference and we are also focusing on descriptive language. Our recent assessment has shown a need for these students to further develop their descriptive writing skills! We are looking at more exciting words to improve our writing so our audience doesn't fall asleep when reading it!

Last week the Grade 3s were lucky to go to Bridgewater for a Football Session with three womens from the Richmond Tigers AFLW team. It was great to hear them talking about their pathway to AFL football as an adult. It isn't the same as their fellow footballers playing AFL in the men's league.

The count down is on until the school holidays AND our class celebration for getting the magic number of house points! Our Pajama Day and Disco is usre to be a hit!

4/5/6 News

We have been hard at work in the 4/5/6 classroom!

In Literacy the students have been learning about subjective and objective language, and are using their knowledge to identify facts and opinions in written texts. They are even going practice using this language in their own writing to create newspaper articles in the upcoming weeks!

In Maths we have finished our unit on probability, and the students’ understanding has shown really positive growth. We have just begun to explore the new topic money, and everyone is excited to launch into it over the next few weeks.
