Melbourne United Basketball Clinic

On Tuesday 11th November our Year 2-6 students took part in a clinic organised by Melbourne United, despite some challenging conditions early on and a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities, we were greeted by perfect conditions for the afternoons main event.

The whole school gathered round our new synthi courts as DJ Will M from Year 6 got the party started. Wayne, the courtside announcer from Melbourne United introduced the team from Cheltenham Primary School, 20 lucky students from Year 2-6, to participate in a game against the best team in the NBL, Melbourne United! United called in all the big guns, headlined by Australian representative Chris Goulding and CPS parent and crowd favourite Milton Doyle.

It was a back and forth contest with United starting ice cold from the floor, they couldn't buy a basket early. At the first break the crowd were treated to a dribbling race between Phoebe M and Millie G from Year 2, Phoebe M took out the win in a close race. The second quarter saw the best of Melbourne United as they opened up a bit of a gap with some their shots starting to drop.

Half time saw an entertaining performance from 3 up and coming hoopers, Parker M, Edward S and Ekene O from Year 2 battled it out in a slam dunk contest. Parker went first and threw down an all mighty slam but the ball bounced off the rim and went flying over the backboard. Edward keen to make his mark flew down the run way before the judges were ready. Ekene closed out the contest with the winning dunk, a half windmill style dunk, which really got the crowd up and about.

The second half saw Cheltenham fight their way back into the game. At the last change we needed a big performance and a late basket closed the game to just a 1 point margin. The final siren sounded with a score of 22-21 United with the win.

It was a wonderful day that many of our students will remember for a long time to come.

A huge thank you to everyone involved at Melbourne United in getting this day up and running.
