Boarding Life

Recently, I found myself in conversation with one of our boarders about the ever-present challenge of balancing homework with social activities. In that discussion, I shared the thought that much of our success, whether at school or in life, comes down to proactive organisation. When we are organised, our minds are calmer, we are less distracted, and we are far less likely to jump from one preventable ‘emergency’ to the next. Instead, we create the space to focus, enjoy, and thrive. When we organised, our homework gets done AND we can have a social life!
Life in the Boarding House is no different. With 56 girls living under one roof, the heartbeat of the house is steady and strong. Many girls were surprised recently when they learned that while we are often with them in the evenings, both Annabella (Deputy Director of Boarding) and I spend much of the day at work too. “But what do you actually do?” they asked. My answer was simple: organise, organise, organise!
Every day brings a mixture of tasks, ensuring boarders can make it to co-curricular commitments at Loreto and in local clubs, attending dental and medical appointments, managing academic follow-ups, supporting pastoral care, and of course, overseeing the running of the house itself and the dedicated staff who support it. It is not unlike managing a busy family home ~ all the things, all the time ~ but the underlying truth remains: success relies on preparation, systems, and avoiding the pull of procrastination.
This is also the message we continue to share with the girls, especially as they pack for the upcoming holidays, as our Year 12s prepare for their final weeks of school, and as all boarders strive to balance their academic, social, and sporting commitments. Unlike their peers who live at home, boarders carry a greater responsibility for their own self-management. They are responsible for their leave requests, for doing their washing, and for navigating the ups and downs of daily life without the constant, face-to-face presence of family. And yet, they rise to the challenge with independence and resilience, supported by a caring and committed staff team.
As the term draws to a close, my hope is that each of our boarders enjoys a well-earned rest during the holidays, relishing home-cooked meals and enjoying the comfort of being surrounded by those they love most.
