Art Term 4 Newsletter

Welcome to Term 4

This term, students will work on 2D and 3D artworks. All students are developing their art making skills and communicating their ideas through mixed media drawing and painting. They will create various 2D artworks then will be using modelling materials to make a 3D form. From playing with playdough and found objects to creating acrylic paintings that communicate to the viewer an image that has meaning to the artist, students are using a wide variety of media to communicate their ideas and feelings.  Students are learning about texture, form, shape, line, pattern, colour and composition. All students are also learning to create work for a variety of purposes and an opportunity to display their work in the wider community and within the school.

Across all year levels, Art lessons are designed with engagement in mind and incorporate the development of art skills, imagination and creativity. The learning intentions are based on the elements of art and principles of design. Students learn about other artists and explore a wide range of media throughout the year.

This term, the whole school focus is on mixed media, painting, modelling and celebrations.

Foundation

Foundation students are given opportunities to experiment with different materials and techniques to make artworks. They are developing listening skills through stories about artists and learning to follow simple instructions about using art supplies and packing up. Foundation students explore drawing through imagination and directed drawing sessions. They explore how different art supplies are used though play and experimentation. They create artworks of themselves swimming in the pool, drawing on their experiences, observations, feelings and ideas. They play with playdough and modelling clay, along with found objects, to experiment with form and texture.

Year 1 and 2

Students are experimenting with mixed media processes and observing how different art supplies react. They use different types of paint, pastels and drawing media. Students play with different types of modelling clay to make 3D animals and forms for display. They learn about art and artists through picture story books and create artworks inspired by illustrations.  Students learn about different cultures and traditions through the sharing of other students artworks about celebrations in their family. They create artworks from both imagination and observation and explore different approaches to art making. Students share their discoveries with their class and learn to talk about what they like about artworks that they view.

Year 3 and 4

Students become more skilled and confident with using a wide variety of media for drawing and painting. They work with a variety of model making clays and further develop their skills in creating form and textures, also learning to create a simple armature as a base. They explore ways to incorporate multiple mediums in one artwork to use a mixed media approach. Students this term will create art works that depict lifecycles and ecosystems as well as work that is culturally significant to themselves. They learn about art styles and artists through looking at images and learning about the artists' lives and influences. They use these artworks as inspiration for their work in that style. Students can communicate their ideas through art and are given opportunities to share their knowledge with their peers, show their work in gallery walks, as well as present their work to the group.

Year 5 and 6

Students explore how visual artists work and explain how ideas are expressed through the artworks they make and view. They explore these processes to create their artworks. In Years 5 and 6, students will further develop acrylic painting, mixed media, and modelling skills. They will explore colour combinations they like and create shapes from negative space to convey meaning in an abstracted form. Students will use modelling materials to make 3D forms and take a mixed media approach to decoration. Students can communicate their ideas through art, evaluate their processes, and discuss their art and the art of others when presenting their work to the group and for display.
