Basketball News

Term 3 was a huge term for basketball. Throughout the term we took out 8 teams from years 7-12. Each team was around the mark with varying finishes from 1st to 4th in their respective competitions. All students played hard, and were eager to train, taking on feedback and advice on and off the court. A huge congratulations to all those that played and supported through the term.

Senior Basketball

Our senior boys were playing hard and fast, with a game plan in place most teams found it difficult to match our place, and we had Willi High drawing up plays to counter our game style. The boys ended up falling short to Willi in a close game to finish the day up fourth.

Intermediate Basketball

We were able to bring two intermediate boys teams on the days with varying results. Our A team breezed through the competition winning each of their games by an average of 25 points to advance to Western Metro this term. Our B side didn't have as much luck, but were able to end the day strong with a win over Laverton.

Year 8 Basketball

Our first girls team for the year started slow but were able to pick it up throughout the day. Only losing to the two Williamstown teams, the girls fought hard and finished third in their competition with spirits high. Our boys were unfortunately outsized on the day but played hard and were able to walk away with 3 wins.

Year 7 Basketball

Our year 7's had a great day out with 3 total teams. Our A's were 3 points away from advancing to a final, falling to a game clock that did not stop for free throws, a team to watch in the coming years. Our other two teams weren't as competitive but enjoyed the experience as both teams were able to win some games.

Volleyball News

The students have continued to train hard, coming in early before school and staying back after school for practice sessions to consolidate their skills. They have received specialised training from VFUM (Volley Friends United Melbourne). Coach Kid, Coach Cormac, and the rest of the coaching team have focused on defence, passing, and footwork — just to name a few of the key skills the students continue to reinforce and add to their “tool bag.”

On Sunday, 19 October, we entered three teams to compete at the WRV Maribyrnong Championships:

  • One U18 Boys Team (Years 12 and 10)
  • Two U14 Mixed Teams (Years 7 and 8)

Each team played hard and competed well in their individual pools. Following strong performances in the round robin stage, all three teams advanced to the Grand Finals of their respective tournaments. Commiserations to our U18 Boys Team, who narrowly lost to a very strong Maribyrnong side, earning a silver medal for their fantastic effort. Thank you to Coach Kid and Coach Rowe for helping the team achieve this result.

Both the Year 7 and Year 8 Mixed Teams were undefeated heading into the Grand Finals. The Year 7s fought hard against the Year 8s throughout the match but eventually fell in two close sets. Thanks to Coach Allan for his strategy and tactics, which helped the Year 8s edge out Coach T’s Year 7s for the gold medal.

Looking ahead to Term 4, the Year 8 Girls are preparing for their SSV Western Metro Region Finals on Friday, 7 November, in Geelong, while our Senior Girls and Boys train for the three-day VV Junior Open from Tuesday, 25 November, to Thursday, 27 November, at MSAC.

Good luck to all teams!

Athletics Day 2025

On Wednesday, September 10th, 45 athletes from Altona College represented their school at the Hobsons Bay Division Secondary Athletics Carnival. It was an eventful day, with many of our fellow students achieving first, second, and third places in various events, while the majority who were not competing loudly cheered from the sidelines, supporting their friends and peers.

A few weeks later, following a much needed school holiday break, 11 of our students participated in the Regional Athletics Carnival held in Moonee Valley. Despite some of the schools travelling from Geelong and Torquay to be at the event , as well as a prestigious sports college in Maribyrnong, our students pushed through in their respective events, securing two third-place finishes. We thank our teacher and running coach Mr. Hodge for organizing these events and making sure all students are ready and excited for their events. Also for occasionally rewarding participating students with a treat from McDonald's as recognition for their hard work. Altona College is known for its athletic nature and great sportsmanship, and this year was no exception.

Athletics Day

Hi, my name is Charli and I will tell you all about the school's athletics journey. We went to districts with around 40 people. It was crazy! It was a fun day with lots of winners in lots of events. I made it through for triple jump, long jump and relay. At the end of the day we had around 20 people qualify to the next round.

So divisional came around and everyone put in so much effort, we had lots of relay teams. We helped run the long jump with Mr Hodgart. Then I won the long jump. I came first again and made it to the next round. That means I made it to regionals for the first time.

Me and my mum traveled to Keilor on Tuesday when my event started there were 16 girls there. I did not place in the top three but I was happy because I got the regional jumper.
