Year 3/4 News

Learning Centre Two
We hope everyone had a restful term break. It's shaping up to be an engaging and exciting last term, packed with many rich learning experiences and a variety of engaging activities for all students. Please see the reminders and upcoming event dates below for this term, and remember to check Class Dojo for any further updates. We are looking forward to the many opportunities ahead to grow, create and celebrate our final time together in LC2.
Our overviews for this term are as follows:
Grandparents’ Day
Students thoroughly enjoyed celebrating Grandparents’ Day. It was a special morning where they were able to spend time with their grandparents or special person, beginning with a beautiful Mass together, followed by opportunities to share and connect. It was a wonderful way to honour the important role grandparents play in our school and family life.
Religion
Year 3
Over the last few weeks in Religion, the Year 3 students learned to recognise and celebrate the important qualities of the women in their lives. They also explored the qualities of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and discovered that she can be represented in many different ways across cultures and traditions. The students enjoyed making connections between their own experiences and Mary’s example of love, kindness, and faith.
Year 4
The first weeks of term the Year 4 students continued their actions for their ‘Catholic Social Teaching’. The Wyndham Park Community Centre Food Bank created videos to raise awareness of the community food bank and made donation boxes for each learning centre. All donations will be donated to the food bank. The Socktober group organised and ran a Sockball Penality Shoot out with all money raised going to Catholic Mission for kids in Zambia. The Uniting Aged Well group made beautiful cards for the residents and wrote letters to brighten their day. It was wonderful to see the students fully involved in their cause and striving to make a difference in the lives of others.
Check out the Infomercials created by :Anthony & Kacper and Amy & Anupama to promote the Food bank. Can you help by making a donation of non perishable food?
Literacy
In Literacy, the Year 3's started to read Matilda by Roald Dahl and the Year 4's The Wild Robot. Students were engaged in reading the beginning of the book through listening and learning about the grammar used in this language-rich text. They look forward to discovering more about the exciting events involving the different characters. Students started to create their own characters and settings for their own future narrative. We have continued using the PhOrMeS program to strengthen students' word reading, spelling, and overall language learning skills.
Mathematics
Year 3
In Numeracy, the students developed their data skills. They learned how to choose the best way to collect information for a question of interest and how to record both categorical data and discrete numerical data. The students also practised how to create and interpret pictographs and column graphs, using the information they gathered. This helped them make sense of data in real-life contexts in a fun and engaging way.
Year 4:
In Numeracy, students investigated Mass and Capacity. They practised accurately measuring, comparing and ordering the different weights of items and used water to measure the capacity of various sized containers. Students have also been learning about Data, including how to collect and record it on a table or spreadsheet, using the data to create a graph and analysing the results of their data collection.
Inquiry
In Inquiry this term we have started our science unit where students are exploring the differences between living, non-living, and once-living things. They have investigated the key characteristics that help us classify objects into these groups, developing their understanding of the world around them. We have also begun looking at categories of animals such as mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish. Using given websites students will find select an animal in each category research as much info as they can and create a slideshow or online document to share thir information.
Wellbeing
During Wellbeing Hour we revisited our school values, what they mean & how we live them at our school. We watched a video clip about '5 Things We Control' and related this to our school routines and expectations.
Respect
We treat everyone with respect. We value what each member of our school community adds to the success of our school.
Responsibility
We make good decisions, we care for others, and we are accountable for our words and actions. We recognise that our words and actions can make a positive difference.
Resilience
We have a clear self-belief, determination and understand that making mistakes is a key part
of our learning. We know that the more effort we put in the better we will become.
Inform & Empower
We prepared for our next Inform & Empower session which is titled 'Being Safe & Secure online. We discussed what we thought 'hackers & scammers' are and came up with a class definition. Students will join other schools across Australia to will participate in the engaging and interactive live-streamed incursion on Wednesday October 22nd. Please read the Parent Information sheet below.
Sun Smart
It's that time of year again when all students must wear a hat when outside. It is strongly suggested that the hat be a bucket style as this gives the best protection. School hats are available from the uniform shop. Please make sure your child's hat has their name on it. Students who do not have a hat will be asked to stay in the shade as we do have...
NO HAT, NO PLAY
Tissues Please
We are in still in need of tissues in the learning spaces. It would be great if each family could donate a box please.
Lost Property
We have a HUGE container of lost property in LC2. If your child is missing a jumper or jacket PLEASE come into LC2 and search through the tub. Any unclaimed items will be donated to the second hand uniform shop.
Reminders:
- Students bring their laptops and headphones to school each day. Please make sure these are fully charged.
- Please make sure that ALL your children's belongings (clothes, lunch boxes, drink bottles, stationery, etc.) are clearly labelled with your child's name. Labelled property can be easily returned to its owner.
