Year 1/2 News

Learning Centre One

It's hard to believe that we are already at the last term of the year. The students have come back to school excited and ready for their last term of the school year. They have settled well and are engaging in some exciting units of learning throughout the term.

Literacy:

In Literacy, our students have been exploring the exciting world of persuasive writing. They have engaged with a variety of texts, each showcasing different styles and techniques used to persuade readers. Through these texts, students have examined the language choices, text structures, and strategies authors use to influence opinions and convey arguments effectively.

Building on this, students have been developing their own persuasive writing skills, experimenting with techniques to clearly express their ideas and convince others. They have focused on crafting compelling arguments, using strong vocabulary, and structuring their writing to make it engaging and convincing. It has been wonderful to see their creativity and confidence grow as they learn to express their viewpoints in powerful and persuasive ways.

Math:

In Maths, students have been learning about location and spatial awareness through maps. They have been exploring key concepts such as directions, using terms like left, right, and different points of reference to navigate and describe positions accurately.

Students have also been learning how to interpret and use map legends, helping them understand the symbols and information presented. By combining these skills, they have been able to read, follow, and create simple maps, enhancing both their problem-solving and critical thinking skills. This hands-on approach has made learning about location engaging, practical, and relevant to real-world situations.

Religion:

In Religion, the students have been learning about Mary and the many different ways we can refer to her. They enjoyed exploring our school song and discussing what it means to us as a community. The students also reflected on how Mary is a wonderful model for the way we can live our lives.

Inquiry:

In Inquiry, students have been investigating the needs of plants and exploring their own senses to observe the world around them. They have been planting seeds and learning about the conditions required for growth, fostering curiosity and hands-on learning.

As part of this unit, students have also been introduced to key scientific concepts, including hypotheses and biology—the study of living things. Through these activities, they are developing their observation, prediction, and critical thinking skills while deepening their understanding of the natural world.

Zoo to you - Wild Action

Gallery Image

On Tuesday, 14th October, our Year 1/2 students took part in an exciting incursion exploring the incredible diversity of Australian animals, linking closely to our Inquiry unit on Biology. The session provided students with the opportunity to learn about different habitats, lifecycles, and adaptations that help animals survive in the wild. The children were captivated as they met a range of native species — including lizards, snakes, frogs, owls, and many more! They especially enjoyed the chance to get up close and observe these animals firsthand, sparking thoughtful discussions and curious questions about how living things grow and change. It was a wonderfully interactive experience that deepened their understanding of Australia’s unique wildlife and has got them excited for their inquiry learning.
