Student Leadership

Norwood has a long tradition of leadership development which actively supports and encourages students to take up leadership roles. We believe that given the opportunity, students can develop skills in leadership and become responsible role models in the College Community.
2026 Year 12 College Captains & Prefects
College Captain and College Vice Captain – Role Descriptions
Specific Duties:
- Liaise with Principal Class, Head of Year 12 and Year 12 Coordinator
- Attendance at the Pre-Orientation morning in December
- Attendance at the Orientation Day in December
- Circulate amongst Year 7 students (and their parents) when they gather on their first day
- Manage Leadership meetings (prepare agendas, chair meeting and circulate minutes)
- Speak at major assemblies, e.g. Investiture and Presentation Night in December
- Attend one of the Year 10 Presentation Balls and participate as a presenter
- Negotiate with Coordinators, Head of Year Level and Principals regarding special events, e.g. dress up days, celebration day, etc.
- Fulfill the roles and responsibilities required of all Prefects, as stated below:
Roles and responsibilities of ALL Prefects:
- Impeccable personal standards as role models in the school and the community, including behaviour and uniform
- Attendance at fortnightly Leadership Meetings, providing a student voice for students within the College
- Preparedness to speak publicly at College events, e.g. assemblies
- Attendance at whole school sporting events, e.g. Athletics and Swimming
- Attendance at the Mini-Orientation Day and the Whole School Orientation Day
- Circulate amongst Year 7 students (and their parents) when they gather on their first day
- Participation on College Tours
- Attendance at College Open Evening
- Regular reports in the College Newsletter
The role of a Captain/Prefect is a significant one that requires excellent communication skills and a strong desire to provide service to others. Captains/Prefects should be excellent role models for other students, demonstrate exemplary conduct in upholding the College values, represent the College at functions and events, both within the College and within the wider community, and demonstrate pride in such a position.
The application is a four-part process:
- Written application (for aspirant Captains, Vice Captains and Prefects)
- Speech (for aspirant Captains and Vice Captains only)
- Staff and student ballot (for aspirant Captains and Vice Captains only)
- Interview if shortlisted (all positions)
