Kitchen Garden

Our first week of Term 4 began with our Foundation students exploring our wonderful garden. Together we explored all the ‘mini beasts’ that we might find in the garden this time of year and using our microscopes, we looked at tiny aphids. We also learnt about the white moths that we have seen flying around our garden in recent times. To combat the damage these mini beasts can cause, we directed them away from our vegetables by applying some of our Chatham-made natural pesticide spray. We are now feeling very confident that our vegetables are fully protected.
During Week 2, our Foundation students ventured into our Kitchen Garden Classroom and made both savoury and sweet puff pastry pinwheels. The fresh ingredients that we collected from our garden included spinach, silver beet, spring onion, baby leak, parsley and rhubarb. We also collected eggs from our chickens for use in this recipe. Together with our very supportive helpers - Pamela, Brett, Suzie, Hayla, Anna, Romelo and Nanna Sharon, we began preparing our pinwheels through lots of measuring, washing and chopping. There was a lot of excitement in the room to try both the sweet and savoury varieties of pinwheel. Once all pinwheels were golden and crispy, we sat down at our set tables and enjoyed our creations together. This is always our favourite part of our sessions and the overwhelming consensus amongst the group was that the pinwheels were, 'delicious!'
Our term also began with our Art Captains erecting a new compost sign, which they had designed and painted, and also the commencement of our ‘Garden Club,’ which will run every Thursday at lunch time. This has involved our Year 5/6 students who have spent the first two weeks of term concentrating on our new corn field and clearing the garden beds in preparation for the planting of our spring/summer seedlings.
There is certainly a lot happening in our Kitchen Garden!
