Year Six - Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families,

Welcome to the start of an exciting year! Our first day back at school has been a fantastic start as students settled into the routines and expectations of our classroom and school community.

Next week we are learning about...

Religious Education Focus

Students will learn about significant places from the Bible, focusing on Bethlehem and its importance in scripture.

English Focus

Reading: Before delving into our novel Rivet Boy, we will focus on activating students’ background knowledge to enhance their understanding and make meaningful connections to the story.

Writing:   Our focus will be on sentence-level writing and text-level narrative writing, building strong foundational skills.

Mathematics Focus

Students will explore prime, composite, and triangular numbers, learning to identify and work with these special types of numbers.

Integrated Studies Focus

We’ll begin our Australian History unit with a pre-assessment to gauge students' existing knowledge about Australian history before exploring colonisation and its impact.

Social & Emotional Learning Focus

Our focus will be on understanding the importance of trusted adults—who they are, how they support us, and why they matter.

Auslan Focus

In Auslan, we will begin Unit 1A, focusing on greetings and essential signs such as hello, goodbye, thank you, and please.

Highlights of Our First Day......

We’ve had a fantastic start to the year, spending time getting to know each other through engaging activities and meaningful discussions. These experiences have helped us build a strong foundation for a positive and collaborative learning environment.

Students tested their mathematical thinking through a strategic place value game, challenging themselves and each other. In reading, we explored 'The Dot', reflecting on its message of creativity and perseverance. Inspired by the story, students designed their own artwork and created powerful growth mindset quotes.

We also focused on the importance of values—what they mean to us as individuals and as a class. Together, we established our shared values, reinforcing our commitment to respect, kindness, and teamwork within our classroom and school community.

It’s been a wonderful first day of learning, connection, and growth!
