Principal's Message

As we come to the end of 2025, I would like to reflect on what has been a significant and transformative year for our community. This has been our first full year operating under our new name, Bindjiroo Yaluk Community School (BYCS). This has been a change that has been embraced with pride and has strengthened our shared sense of identity and purpose.

2025 has also been a school review year, bringing with it a strong focus on reflection, improvement and change. Throughout this process, staff have engaged thoughtfully with feedback and data, using it to guide decisions that support improved outcomes for our students. This work has reinforced our commitment to continuous improvement and will continue to shape our direction in the years ahead.

We have been pleased to welcome new students and staff to BYCS this year. Their energy, ideas and commitment have enriched our community and contributed positively to the culture of the school. Alongside this growth, we have continued to invest in our physical environment. Ongoing development of our school grounds has included improvements to accessibility and security at our Coburg campus, ensuring a safer and more inclusive space for all. Following some damage to student toilets earlier in the year, significant refurbishment works were undertaken, resulting in greatly improved facilities for our students.

A notable milestone in 2025 has been the first year in many that BYCS students have sat for a scored VCE. This achievement confirms our commitment to supporting students to complete their studies with us, regardless of what completion looks like for each individual, and reflects the dedication of both students and staff.

Looking ahead to 2026, we will place a renewed emphasis on attendance and punctuality. A daily 10-minute morning homegroup session will be introduced to strengthen connections between students and their homegroup teachers and to better support this work. The school day will continue to begin at 9.00am and conclude at 3.00pm, with the recess break reduced by ten minutes to accommodate this important addition.

Finally, we will farewell several staff members at the end of this year, many of whom have served BYCS for a long time. We thank them sincerely for their dedication and contributions and wish them every success in their future endeavours. In addition, some staff will be changing the campus at which they are based in 2026. I greatly appreciate their willingness to embrace these changes in the best interests of our students and learning programs.
